The 25-year-old French centreback sealed a deadline day loan move (with an option to buy at the end of the season) to Serie A side Roma, and has publicly stated that he wants to forget all about his time in the Premier League in order to try and move on.

He has said that joining Newcastle back in 2013 was a mistake and seems eager to improve his performances as he tries to establish himself as a potential candidate for the international side with Les Bleus in the foreseeable future, having last played in 2012.

In his first official press conference at Roma, he had this to say: "I am delighted to be here and I hope to bring something extra to this team. Things didn't work out in England for me, perhaps because in England they see things in a different way, everything there is based on physicality. However, here it's more about ball possession and I believe that the Serie A is more similar to Ligue 1.

"I believe I can give my best to prove that in England things simply went badly, the manager knows me and I know him because he used to coach in France; where he was one of the best coaches. He convinced me to come here because he wants to win the league title and I am hungry to win trophies. We have a superb squad and we will do all that we can to achieve our aims, I know that we have to work a lot and I must give my all."
