Bad blood between Benatia and Roma continues

Earlier on in the week, as reported by me - Benatia had confirmed that he was not particularly happy to leave Serie A side Roma, but was never going to say no to "one of the top 4 teams in the world" in the form of current Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

But now, the club's official president James Pallotta has replied back to the defender's comments saying that the reason he was sold was because he is a liar.

He said: "Mehdi Benatia has obviously continued with his pattern of outright fabrications over the last couple of months. We had a verbal agreement on compensation and a raise back in July in Boston - he personally said to me that he was happy after I told him flat out with no exceptions that we wanted him to stay.

Over the following month, he lied about wanting to stay and about the details of his compensation to both Rudi Garcia (club manager) and his team-mates. Lying to me was one thing which I can somewhat handle, but lying to Rudi Garcia and his team-mates was completely unacceptable to me. I told Walter Sabatini (sporting director) he was becoming a poison and I wanted him gone, and Rudi and Walter agreed. It wasn't about the money; it was about having character in our locker room.

We are in a very sound financial position and as owners of Roma, we make difficult decisions all the time. As a fan of Roma, I am deeply disappointed that one of our players could act this way."

Interesting comments made there by the president, with the situation's facts and lies still uncertain. It seems silly to say that he would publicly lie - especially given his position at the club, and if Benatia has been unfaithful to the club it would be a huge shame given the outstanding performances he contributed to last season.

Either way, despite the controversy over the current situation - many people will now argue that you can never trust the top footballers as they are already perceived as money-hungry, which is something you never want to see in football.

One thing for sure is, Benatia is unlikely to get a nice reception in either of the games (if he plays) against his former club Roma in the UEFA Champions League group stage over the next couple of months. Bayern and Roma are in Group E, alongside Manchester City and CSKA Moscow.
