After a summer-long search for a club, Hugo Almeida has found a home. Released by Besiktas in June, Almeida was linked with the likes of Leicester, QPR, and more recently middle eastern club Al Nasr. Though his performances for the Portuguese National Team have never risen above tepid, Almeida’s scoring exploits in both Germany and Turkey are admirable. During his times at Werder Bremen and Besiktas, Almeida averaged a return of almost a goal every other game, and ironically enough, last season at Besiktas was the most prolific of his career.
Now, Almeida moves to a perennial struggler. Cesena is currently in the Serie A after a fourth-place finish last season in the Serie B. In recent years, Cesena has suffered the agony of back-to-back promotion-then-relegations. Only time will tell whether this season will be end with relegation, but Almeida was surely signed to combat just that.
