Lazio made their return to the Champions League after achieving their highest finish and qualification for the tournament since the 2006/07 season. With stars like Felipe Anderson, Antonio Candreva and Marco Parolo in their ranks, manager Stefano Pioli already knows that his squad needs to be strengthened if they are to last in the Champions League.

The first target Pioli has picked out is Johannes Geis, the defensive midfielder from Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05. After signing from Greuther Fürth back in 2013, the 21 year old has cemented his place in the Mainz side with a string of impressive performances. It's in the season just gone that Geis really made his name as he helped them achieve a respectable 11th place finish. Geis has also built up a reputation for his set pieces after scoring a number of fantastic free-kicks this season. Due to Mainz not being one of the "big clubs" in Germany, Lazio could pick up Geis for a small fee if their interest develops any further.

Lazio's are also interested in a second Bundesliga player: Wolfsburg star Daniel Caligiuri. Since his move from SC Freiburg in summer 2013, he struggled in his first season but this season he nailed down a regular starting spot ahead of World Cup winner André Schürrle. Scoring a number of important goals and dangerously quick on the counter-attack, Caligiuri would fit into Lazio's system perfectly. After Wolfsburg spent £22 million on Schürrle, could they be willing to sell Caligiuri to use their new superstar signing. Caligiuri wouldn't be cheap but it's definitely worth enquiring for a player of his quality.

Lazio aren't looking to spend much money by the looks of things but if they hang onto their big names and pick up player like Geis and Caligiuri for small fees, they'll be dark horses in Serie A and the Champions League next season.
