Roma are closing in on the signature of 22-year-old Stuttgart defender Antonio Rudiger, according to Sky Sports.

The Giallorossi have reportedly agreed personal terms with the German, but are now tasked with convincing Stuttgart to sell.

The defender made 19 apperances for Stuttgart last term, though was ravaged by injuries throughout the campaign.

Roma are seeking replacements for Alessio Romagnoli -- who has departed for Milan -- and Yanga M'Biwa, who is finalising a move to Olympique Lyonnais

Roma require a central defender

Roma's options in the heart of defence are now few and far between with the exits of both Romagnoli and, imminently, M'Biwa.

The former, while he did not appear for Roma last term, was set to feature for Rudi Garcia's side this campaign, but the club simply could not refuse Milan's lucrative offer of €30 million.

M'Biwa, meanwhile, enjoyed a stellar season alongside Kostas Manolas in defence, but his form suffered as the season drew to a close.

With worries over Leandro Castan -- who is recovering from brain surgery -- Roma require a central defender and, although there are many who boast a bigger pedigree, Rudiger would be a fine fit in the heart of the back four.

One for the future

Having represented Germany from U18's upwards, Rudiger debutised for the senior side against Poland in May 2014 and has now earned six caps for his country.

The defender was a member of the Borussia Dortmund youth academy, before joining Stuttgart in 2011.

There, he has made 66 first-team appearances, netting his first goal for the side in a 6-2 rout of Hoffenheim in September 2013.

Rudiger penned a new five year deal in 2013 and, given his tender age, will be difficult to prize away from the Bundesliga outfit.

Several outlets have reported that the German may be loaned to Roma with an option to buy.
