Real Madrid's hopes of winning all six competitions they have entered this year was dealt a fatal blow after their visit to the Vicente Calderon ended in a 1-0 defeat, 2-1 on aggregate, to their hometown rivals Atletico Madrid. The reigning Champions of Europe played right into the hosts' hands as the game had more cynical fouling than it had clear cut chances and a yellow card count that could be mistaken for the temperature on a chilly autumn day in Spain's capital. There were 9 in total with two red cards, one for Luka Modric and one for Diego Simeone, for good measure.

As cynical as it might have been by Los Rojiblancos, it won't matter to the pragmatic Diego Simeone, who was sent to the stands during the first half for dissent towards an official and patting him on the head. He spent the rest of the game pacing up and down amongst the fans in the upper tiers of the Atletico's home.

Mario Mandzukic scored his first competitive goal for his new team which was more the result of poor defending than it was incisive attacking. A long ball by Atletico's goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya was headed down by Mandzukic and played back into his path by Antoine Griezmann from where the Croatian striker made no mistake, beating Iker Casillas hands down with a half volley into the bottom corner.

Cristiano Ronaldo entered the fray as a half time substitute but failed to make an impression as Atletico's tireless work rate and compact style resulted in chances being few and far between. To say that it was a smash and grab kind of performance would be an injustice as Atletico pushed forward on the counter until the last minute and could have been three or four in front if it wasn't for some rustiness and lack of sharpness in front of goal.

Real Madrid have some readjusting to do with some new signings in key positions failing to make an impact during the game and possible departures creating an element of uncertainty in the camp. Atletico won't worry too much with their rivals concerns as the 2-1 victory bodes well for them entering the new season attempting to regain their La Liga crown.
