Atletico Madrid hosted Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 following a 1-0 win for the Germans at home and it was taken all the way to a dramatic shootout after extra time where the hosts booked their place into the quarterfinals.

Things got rolling as quick as in the 11th minute, when the away team had the first big chance of the match. Karim Bellarabi was allowed some surprising space at the top of the area and was able to provide a low effort that flashed directly wide of the woodwork. There were a bit of scares however for the home side as some 10 minutes later, Moya went down to gather a routine ball and looked to have tweaked his left hamstring on the way to the floor, making him unable to continue the remainder of the match allowing Jan Oblak to come on to replace him.

Atletico Madrid did get their chance however in the 27th minute. Following Koke's free kick, The Germans deflected the ball from a header to allow Cani to work the ball to Mario Suarez, as his shot from just inside the box goes past Bernd Leno and provide the lead and tied aggregate score for the tie.

5 minutes later, Atletico would almost doubled their lead had Wendell not been able to sniff out Arda Turan's pass to Mario Manduzkic with a great defensive effort. Just before half time, Bayer had one last chance as Son was able to provide delicate pass for Wendell and his effort was enough for the Atleti keeper to get the chance to pounce the ball away.

In a second half with not many opportunities, the ones that came, came from the hosts. In the 71st minute, Koke was able to pick out a typically accurate ball into the box, however his shot just flashed menacingly across the face of goal, not giving the chance to Raul Garcia who was there in the back post.

Extra time then approached as both sides were level on aggregate. In the 108th minute, Turan was able to supply Garcia a marvelous pass allowuing the midfielder to lash a ferocious effort on goal in which Leno was able to save it perfectly. One last chance for a winner came from the away side before the end of extra time as Rolfes efforted from 40 yards out as his shot allowed the substitute keeper to scramble to cover and just watched the ball move just wide of the post.

Penalties would ultimately decide everything. Following both misses from both clubs (Garcia and Calhanoglu respectively), Antoine Griezmann and Mario Suarez scored their goals before Toprak put a poor attempt over the bar. Howver, Leno dove low and right to thwart the next shot from Atletico by Koke. Castro scored on Bayer’s next attempt to level things at two going into the fifth takers. Fernando Torres would ultimately score the winner as Stefan Kiessling sent his shot to go over the bar and allowed Atletico Madrid to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
