Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has put pen-to-paper on a three year extension with the current Spanish champions, which will see him remain at Vicente Calderon until 2020.

Having initially taken over the La Liga outfit at the end of 2011, the former Argentina captain has transformed his side into one of the leading teams in Europe.

Winning their first domestic league title in 18 years last season, Simeone ensured the ongoing reign of Barcelona and Real Madrid was pressured. With his success leading to wide speculation regarding his future in Madrid, the 44-year-old remained loyal to the club he represented 134 times as a player, as Atletico made the announcement on Twitter.

Simeone kicked off his success with the club in the Europa League, winning the title in his debut season before reaching the final of the Champions League during the 2013/14 season, unlucky to lose out to Real Madrid in extra time after dominating for 90 minutes in a 4-1 defeat.

Having devastated Chelsea in the 2012 European Super Cup, with another 41 scoreline, Atletico won the King’s Cup a year later under the reign of Simeone, beating local rivals Real Madrid in the future before also seeing off their neighbours in the Spanish Super Cup back in August this season.

Simeone spoke at a news conference shortly after the announcement, saying: "I have chosen to be here because I am convinced the club will continue to grow. Because it is strong, there is enthusiasm and there are people here whose desire to participate is stronger each day."

After earning over 100 international caps for the Argentinian national side as a defensive midfielder, Simeone has previously managed Racing for two spells, Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Catania.

Atletico Madrid currently sit fourth in the La Liga, trailing leaders Barcelona by nine points.
