La Liga champions Barcelona have announced that right-back Dani Alves has signed a new two-year contract extension with the club, to silence rumours of a move elsewhere this summer.

It was previously reported that the 32-year-old was courting interest from Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Premier League side Manchester United, as his future was undecided coming into the closing weeks of the season, despite being a regular first-team player. When asked by reporters repeatedly, he denied rumours suggesting he was angling for a move away, before admitting he was unhappy about how he felt the club handled the situation.

It has been also suggested that Alves took advantage of interest from other clubs to get an improved contract offer from Barça, as they were preparing for the experienced Brazilian to leave the club this summer. Barcelona confirmed the signing of Sevilla's Aleix Vidal, who left the club as a youngster, and although he will not be able to feature for the first-team until their transfer embargo is finished in January, it seemed as though the side were eager to find a replacement, should Alves have wanted to leave.

The official statement, on the Barcelona website read: "FC Barcelona announces that Dani Alves has accepted the proposal of the Club for the renewal of his contract, which expires on 30 June. The new agreement linking the two parties will run for two more seasons, until 30 June 2017, plus an optional third season."
