Villarreal started the second round of fixtures from the next season off with a comfortable 3-1 home victory, at the expense of Espanyol - to earn their first victory of the campaign. Last term's champions Barcelona, had to grind out a hard-fought slender win over Malaga, to ensure they continued in winning form. Meanwhile, last season's runners-up Real Madrid were sublime at the Bernabeú, thrashing Real Betis by a rather convincing five goals to nil at home.

Unpredictable but exciting results from La Liga

Eibar have started the season off brightly, with two consecutive victories - Athletic Bilbao their next one. Granada found themselves ahead with a two-goal cushion in the early stages, but were treated to a tense fight against Getafe, whilst Las Palmas and Levante drew in a less-than-exciting goal-less affair.

Celta Vigo got themselves a rather impressive 3-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, and with their positive goal difference, find themselves at the top of the table as a result. UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla were given a comprehensive lesson by rivals Atlético Madrid, as Diego Simeone's men travelled back home with all three points, as well as three goals, in the bag. The final two fixtures of the weekend were - Valencia 1-1 Deportivo and Real Sociedad 0-0 Sporting Gijon; both of which are still searching for their first wins of the new term.

Best XI - Round Two

In goal, Carlos Kameni starts the team from the back. Despite his side losing by a goal to nil against Barça, he still made well sure that the champions were unable to convert the other fourteen shots on-target during the 90 minutes. However, he'll have been frustrated with himself - after his own error gifted former Arsenal man Thomas Vermaelen the opportunity to score.

In defence, Miguel Lopes performed very well for Granada. The full-back made no mistakes when it came to his tackling, clearances and headed clearances too. He was on top of his game and made life difficult for Getafe's wingers to spring forward on the attack. Lopes was also impressive in the attacking side of the game making eight passes in the final third, as well as creating a chance for his team-mate too.

The other full-back had to be, Benoit Tremoulinas. Another player who found himself on the losing side, as the Sevilla man was one of few players who actually had encouraging displays, defending well against Atlético full-back Juanfran as well as creating three chances and totalling a pass completion rate of 80% too.

Heart of defence, Thomas Vermaelen and Andreu Fontas both players played a vital part in their victory and ensuring no goals were conceded. Fontas had no errors in him being successful on all tackles, headed clearances and original clearances he made. He also completed 90 out of his 97 passes and made a shot for him self. Vermaelen surprisingly had 3 shots on target and one paid off for him which interesting for a centre-back, after having a difficult time with injuries he is finally showing reasons why Barcelona brought him in the first place.

In midfield, Atlético's captain Gabi was the main man during the game being effective on both sides of the pitch. No player made more tackles, ball recoveries and interceptions than him. He also had one shot during the game and put it away to clinical effect, whilst it was evident that Sevilla struggled to create much from the centre of the park with him on hand to frustrate throughout.

James Rodriguez, was immense for Real on the weekend, scoring a sublime free-kick and an overhead kick too. The creative Colombian was making Real Betis's defensive duties hard to cover by creating Gareth Bale's first goal within the first few minutes after the referee's initial whilst. His passing was also impressive, and the former Porto and Monaco man created five chances too.

Eibar midfielder, Adrian Gonzalez - the final central midfielder in the TOTW. He made life difficult for Bilbao's defence, having three shots on target, creating once chance and making eight passes in the final third, looking to create danger in-and-around the penalty area.

On the wings, Gareth Bale was superb for Real. The Welshman scored a well-taken brace, as well as assisting one too - for Karim Benzema to get himself on the scoresheet. He'll be hoping that he can continue to impress with displays such as this one, especially with the amount of harsh criticism placed under his name in recent months.

Across the other flank, Spanish winger Nolito delivered with a world-class performance for Celta Vigo. Two goals and an assist in the dying embers of the game, his dribbling abilities were evident for everyone to see as he did his best to make it a troublesome task to deal with his threat, not least with the opposition down to ten men.

The lone striker of the team, Roberto Soldado. Plenty of Premier League enthuasiasts will be raising their eyebrows, after the Spaniard endured a turbulent spell at White Hart Lane with Tottenham - but he scored an important equaliser against Espanyol, as well as creating two chances in the last few minutes for Cedric Bakambu - both of which were scored, giving the Yellow Submarine a memorable victory.
