The 31 players who will head to England to represent Samoa in this year's Rugby World Cup have been announced.

Head coach Stephen Betham has confirmed that London Irish back-rower Ofisa Treviranus (pictured) will lead the side, as one of 12 English-based players named in the squad.

The 18 forwards named in the squad makes Samoa's intentions clear, they hope to overpower their opponents and smash their way through Pool B where they will take on South Africa, Japan, Scotland and the USA.

Premiership experience in abundance

A large amount of the squad have experience playing in English conditions, which could be crucial in the upcoming World Cup.

Alongside Treviranus who skippers the side, Bristol pair Jack Lam and Anthony Perenise, as well as Newcastle's Alesana Tuilagi, who is well known to all fans in Europe after his years of dominance.

For the experienced Tuilagi this will be his last attempt at making his mark on the sport's showpeice event after also appearing at the 2003, 2007 and 2011 editions of the competition.

Census Johnston one of big names to miss out

After appearing to have played his last game for his nation earlier this year, Census Johnston made a sensational return in the historic game against the All Blacks in Apia

It had become apparent that Johnston was under pressure from his club Toulouse, to fullfill his contract with the French club, including matches during the World Cup hence his retirement.

According to former Samoan international Daniel Leo, "don't be surprised if the larger than life tighthead suddenly appears," adding to the suggestion that Johnston may in-fact return to the fold ahead of the competition.

There are also a couple of injuries which have caused players to miss out, with coach Betham saying, "We have had some late challenges with injuries ruling out valuable players such as James Johnston (leg), Pele Cowley (shoulder) and David Lemi (back)."

Samoa start their campaign on Saturday 20th September, when they face the USA at the Brighton Community Stadium.
