British number one Andy Murray progressed to the third round of the Canadian masters with a straight sets win over Tommy Robredo, 6-4 7-5.

Murray starts fastest after rain delay

The match had been delayed by rain on Tuesday night, and it resumed at 4-4 in the first set, Murray serving. On the resumption, the Scot had the better start, winning the first three games to take the first set and get on the board in the second.

Murray didn't have it all his own way though, falling behind 4-2 in that second set, bringing up memories of lengthy matches between these two in the past - Murray saved a total of ten match points when the players met in the Shenzhen and Valencia finals last autumn.

This, time, however, there was no such drama, Murray winning five of the last six games to take the set 7-5, and with it the match. The world number three hit six aces, and broke his Spanish opponent four times.

Murray satisfied with performance

Afterwards, Murray was pleased with his performance, saying that the match had been "the best I hit the ball on the hard courts since I started playing on it. I felt like I was returning a little bit better, which is important". He also paid tribute to his aggression on court, observing that he was "hitting my backhand better and it forced Tommy to slice the ball. Then I could dictate the points".

Should Murray reach the final in Montreal, he'll become the world number two - a boost ahead of the US Open, where the second seed will avoid tournament favourite Novak Djokovic until the final round.

Robredo will be looking to go deeper next week in Cincinnati, as he prepares for the US Open, a tournament where he famously beat Roger Federer in the fourth round in 2013.

Murray's next opponent will be Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, who has lost to the Scot on all four occasions that they have played.
