British number one Heather Watson was unable to progress to round three in Toronto, going out to Andrea Petkovic 6-4 6-3. Having lost in the early rounds of last week's Citi Open, Watson yet again failed to match her opponent who easily dismantled her to secure the straight sets win. It leaves Watson to reflect on another tough week in the build up to the US Open, having come through qualifying to make the main draw and beaten Irina Falconi in the first round but being stopped by a higher ranked opponent in the German.

Return dominates

Watson struggled on serve in the second round encounter, making just 43% of her first serve, and hitting five double faults. The tie was dominated by return, featuring eleven breaks of serve, of which seven were earned by Petkovic.

The Brit will be disappointed by her performance on serve today, but there are plently of positives for Watson to take from Toronto. Although she failed to match her 2014 result, when she reached the third round, she can be pleased with qualifying and winning her first round match. Petkovic started as the favourite for this match, so this loss is perhaps not unexpected.

This is in sharp contrast to her last tournament, where she won just three games against a wildcard from outside the top 100. This week should allay some fears of a slump after coming so close to ousting eventual champion Serena Williams from Wimbledon.

Petkovic to face Serena Williams

Petkovic will be pleased to reach the third round after losing to lower-ranked players in four of her last five tournaments. This is her first appearance in Toronto since reaching the quarterfinals in 2011.

To match that result, the German will have to overcome runaway world number one Williams in the third round. Williams is 40-1 in 2015, and a defeat to Petkovic would be her first in five matches between the two.
