Vitalia Diatchenko retired whilst a set and a break down against Serena Williams as the reigning US Open champion made it into the second round in the tournament's 2015 edition.

The Russian was simply dismantled by her opponent on Monday night, losing the first set 6-0 before deciding to call it a day when she was 2-0 down in the second.

Williams will face 23-year-old Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens in the next round, who overcame Croatian veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in three sets - coming from a set down to do so.

World number one simply unstoppable on Arthur Ashe

To call the match between Williams and Diatchenko one-sided would be an understatement, with the former absolutely dominant as she lost just one point on her first serve in the entire match.

Furthermore, she did not allow the Russian to play, winning 16 of the 19 points she received as she coasted through the first set.

Admittedly, Diatchenko did not look fit to play from the moment she stepped out on court, with an ankle injury, one which eventually led to her retirement, not allowing her to compete with Williams, but take nothing away from the world number one who served immaculately and played some incredible shots throughout.

Diatchenko eventually retires

After being bageled in the first set and broken early on in the second, the 25-year-old Russian threw in the towel with just over 30 minutes played, her ankle, which was strapped up towards the end of that first set, the problem that led to the match's premature end.

Diatchenko had surgery on her left achilles earlier this year, and she does not look comfortable following that just yet, with more recovery time perhaps needed given some of her recent results - including a defeat in Stanford to Ajla Tomljanović which saw her double bageled.

The match ended with the score reading 6-0 2-0 in Williams' favour, the reigning champion losing just five of the 37 points played.
