Liverpool were aiming to kickstart their campaign after dropping points in the opening week, whereas Crystal Palace continued their tough start by coming up against another big six team.

The game was very much an affair of defence vs attack - Liverpool were on the offensive from the first whistle and squandered a lot of chances, which came to haunt them as a quick counter-attack saw Palace take the lead through a well-taken Wilfried Zaha goal.

This spurred Liverpool on to dominate the second half where they rescued a point via a solo goal from Luis Diaz. The fight shown by Liverpool was marred by Darwin Nunez and his rash reaction to being bullied all game by Joachim Andersen.

Liverpool

Alisson - 6/10

Alisson was merely a spectator for the majority of the game. However, when called upon he was beaten by Zaha from what was a tough angle to score from. He was also lucky to see Zaha hit the post when he was found to be in no man's land.

Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7/10

Trent was a constant thorn in the side of Palace with his great use of the ball. Throughout the game, he played a mix of right wing-back and centre midfield. The further the game went on the bigger influence he had with deep crosses opening up chances that were continuously spurned.

Nat Phillips - 5/10

Thrust into the starting XI due to ongoing injuries, it was clear from minute one that he was massively out of his depth. Zaha targeted him and got his just rewards when he was able to run in behind and convert his chance. It didn't improve until he was eventually subbed off.

Virgil Van Dijk - 6/10

Virgil as always was solid at the back and rarely looked in trouble. He did have his moments which looked like it was borne out of frustration more than anything else. He was proactive and was keen to get the ball going when players like Fabinho and James Milner were slowing play down.

Andrew Robertson - 6/10

Unlike the usual Robertson we have come to know, he was sloppy in possession and also with his deliveries. He was rarely troubled defensively but struggled to break down the stubborn back like of Palace. Was replaced later in the game as Liverpool began to chase the game and wanted a bit more pace added to the wing-back position.

Harvey Elliott - 7/10

Was the only positive and bright spark about Liverpool the whole game. He brought the game to Palace and continued to cause problems via clever movement and high-tempo passing. He is quickly stamping his authority in the middle of the park as he orchestrated play for every minute he was playing. Was eventually substituted but will be happy with his performance.

Fabinho - 5/10

One of the major downfalls of the Liverpool game. Too slow on the ball and often giving possession away, it quickly became a night to forget. He lacked urgency when Liverpool needed it the most and is lucky to have lasted the full match. With Milner and himself in the team, it is just often too slow and laboured to break down a stubborn back line.

James Milner - 6/10

The usual Milner performance was clear to see. Dogged out of possession and ensuring he was able to gain possession or force mistakes high into the opponent's half. On the flip side, his time on the ball was very much laboured and slow which allowed Palace to get behind that wall of five and protect their goal.

Mohammed Salah - 5/10

It was a very quiet game from the star Liverpool player and that is all down to the performance of Palace as a whole. However, special mention goes to Tyrick Mitchell who marked him clean out of the game. Salah showed glimpses of his usual self but was a passenger for the most part.

Luis Diaz - 7/10

Diaz was in and out of the game for large portions of the game. He struggled to get his foot on the ball and penetrate the back line of Palace. A flash of brilliance from him bagged a point for Liverpool with a great run and finish.

Darwin Nunez - 3/10

A night to forget for the big money signing who was comprehensively off the pace from minute one. He continued to spurn chances that a player of his calibre should be finishing. A flash point ended his game early with a silly red card that will anger his manager who will be expecting more.

Substitutions

Kostas Tsimikas (63') - 5/10

Tsimikas came on to add a little pace and energy to the left wing-back position. He will ultimately be disappointed with his little influence on the game as he continued to waste good crossing opportunities with poorly hit balls.

Jordan Henderson (63') - 5/10

Another sub to grace the pitch in the 63rd minute and was a direct replacement for Milner. He quickly assumed his role as the high-pressing instigator to force turnovers in the opposition's half.

Joe Gomez (63') - 5/10

Joe Gomez had very little involvement in the game after being introduced and was rarely under trouble from the ever increasingly defensive Palace side.

Fabio Carvalho (79') - N/A

The substitution was made with little time on the clock to influence the game.

Crystal Palace

Vincente Guaita - 6/10

Assured performance from the word go. Was commanding his back line well which was a catalyst for a pitch-perfect performance. Had no chance with the goal and will be happy with his display.

Nathaniel Clyne - 6/10

Came back to haunt his old team with a very good display at the back. Managed to keep Diaz quiet apart from a goal out of the blue.

Joel Ward - 6/10

Ward was vital in helping Clyne keep the left-hand side of Liverpool attacks quiet. He was great at shutting down attacks and managed to intercept passes throughout the game which continued to shut down attacks at source.

Joachim Andersen - 6/10

Andersen managed to boss Nunez all game and got into the head of his opponent. He was able to stop any link-up attempts with the target striker and managed to rile him up so much that he lashed out and got sent off. Assured defensive performance.

Marc Guehi - 7/10

Guehi produced a performance that showed maturity and calmness way beyond his years. Managed to stop a lot of attacks at source and was able to double up with Mitchell to ensure that Salah's threat was quashed from the get-go.

Tyrick Mitchell - 8/10

Mitchell was the stand-out defender for Palace. He was assured in defence and easily stopped Salah from having any influence on the game. After a performance that caught the eye people will be keen to see what else he can do in the coming weeks.

Jordan Ayew - 5/10

A limited attacking display from Ayew due to Palace's set-up, which made for a mundane performance from normally a very attack-minded player. A lot has to be said for his willingness to do dirty work and get stuck right into the role expected of him.

Jeffrey Schlupp - 6/10

Schlupp was very much up against it from the first whistle with a barrage of central attacks from Liverpool that carved open the Palace midfield. Slowly but surely he grew into the game and thwarted a lot of attacks and occasionally kick-started some of Palace's best attacking opportunities.

Cheick Doucoure - 6/10

Doucoure was deployed as a midfield general, with his only task being to break and disrupt any forward move from Liverpool, which he mastered to a tee and was relentless all game.

Eberechi Eze - 7/10

Eze was a constant thorn in Liverpool's side. He managed to start most counter-attacks for Palace with neat play in tight areas that managed to free up passing opportunities for Zaha to get in behind. Topped his performance off with a great pass and assist.

Wilfried Zaha - 8/10

Zaha was constantly occupying the back line of Liverpool with runs in behind and running at them, forcing them into fouls or opening up chances for his side.

He was relentless in his willingness to run for his team and has matured as a player under Patrick Viera. He took his goal well and was unlucky not to score another when coming close to regaining the lead after hitting the post from close range.

Substitutions

Odsonne Edouard (63') - 5/10

Edouard was able to come on in an attempt to add some energy to the wing after Ayew faded out of the game. Wasn't able to get on the ball often and had no real influence on the scoreline.

Will Hughes (79') - N/A

Not enough time to impact on the game.

Chris Richards (79') - N/A

Not enough time to impact on the game.

Luka Milivojevic (79') - N/A

Not enough time to impact on the game.

Michael Olise (88') - N/A

Olise showed glimpses of the player that was breaking through until his season was curtailed by injury. His reintroduction would have pleased the Palace fans.

Player of The Match

The player of the match was a toss-up between numerous Palace players and one that deserves special recognition is Tyrick Mitchell who played the perfect game and shut out one of the best players in the world for the whole of the game.

However, the award has to go to Zaha who ran the line perfectly throughout and showed some really good footwork to beat numerous Liverpool defenders during the contest. He took his goal well and impressed with his off-the-ball work.
