Tottenham Hotspur completed a sensational comeback to beat Leeds 4-3 in North London. It may well go down as a Premier League classic, as both sides threw caution to the wind for 90 minutes.

Leeds took the lead on three separate occasions thanks to goals from Crysencio Summerville and Rodrigo. The travelling fans thought they had won it when Rodrigo made it 3-2 in the 76th minute. However, two goals from Rodrigo Bentancur late on secured victory for Antonio Conte's men.

It was a brilliant match to finish the first section of the season on, and summed up the current situations at both clubs perfectly. Spurs and Leeds have both struggled defensively in recent weeks, and that was on show in N17.

Here's four things we learnt from the Premier League classic in North London:

  • He's the reason

Ever since Mousa Dembele left Spurs in 2019, the North London side have struggled to have a strong midfield presence in the middle of the park. Having a player with fight and grit is key to success, and that is what Bentancur shows week in, week out.

It could be argued that the Uruguayan midfielder has been the player of the season so far for the Lilywhites, as he continuously plays a key part in transition from defence to attack. Against Leeds, he was in the right place at the right time to fire Spurs level in the 81st minute. Albeit his shot deflected past the goalkeeper, it was still a superb effort from the midfielder as he controlled the ball impeccably.

The former Juventus midfielder then won it for the Lilywhites after combining superbly with Dejan Kulusevski. It sparked manic scenes in the South Stand, as Spurs completed their comeback.

  • Defensive woes once again

On paper, the hosts probably did not deserve to earn all three points on Saturday. In the first half, Leeds caused numerous problems for Conte's men. Recently, the Lilywhites have caused their own harm in defence through individual errors, and that was the same case on Saturday.

For the opening goal, Summerville raced in between Emerson Royal and Eric Dierbefore beating Hugo Lloris at his near post. It was weak defending for Spurs, and should have been easily preventable. Rodrigo's first goal also showed a lack of defensive stability in North London. The initial corner was cleared without conviction, allowing the following ball to be easily played into Rodrigo's path.

For a team with ambitions to challenge for the biggest trophies in the world, Spurs must improve defensively. Recently, Antonio Conte has stated that he wants new signings in January. After performances in autumn, it may well be very likely that the Italian goes shopping for a new defender.

  • Summerville continues hot streak

A few months ago, very few people had heard of the name Crysencio Summerville. The young Dutch winger featured just three times for the Yorkshire side last season. However, this season he has taken the world by storm.

His goal against Spurs continued his goalscoring streak to four games in a row. It was a well-taken strike from the youngster, which any winger would be pleased with. The 21-year-old drove forward, racing in between Emerson and Dier, before firing powerfully past Lloris. Although the defending was weak from the hosts, his goal showed that the Dutchman is high in confidence at the moment.

Summerville's form has been highly dependent on his relationship with Rodrigo, who has also scored in four games in a row. Both strikes from the Spaniard were taken emphatically, especially his second goal. The striker raced past Davinson Sanchez, before firing a powerful left-footed shot across Lloris and into the bottom right corner. Leeds are building a dream partnership in Yorkshire, which will be key to their survival.

  • Unpredictable Leeds on show

Life for Leeds fans has also been chaotic. Just a few decades ago, they were playing in the Champions League, but that joy was followed by years of misery in the Championship. It's become a normality for the Yorkshire fans to expect the unexpected, but I'm not sure if any fan could have expected their recent form.

Their past four matches have all featured goals within the final ten minutes. On two occasions, Summerville has caused joy for the Leeds fans with late goals against Bournemouth and Liverpool. However, the Yorkshire fans have also had their hearts broken by late goals from Willian and Bentancur against Fulham and Spurs retrospectively.

Defensively, Leeds have struggled to create a formidable force at the back. The Whites have conceded the fourth most goals in the Premier League this season, which shows the struggles Jesse Marsch is facing. The American has never been known for a defensive outlet, but he must find a solution before his side is sucked into a relegation battle.
