Antonio Conte faced the press today ahead of Tottenham Hotspur's clash against Southampton on Saturday.

It is a season that is filled with much anticipation and excitement for Tottenham fans, with the club returning to the Champions League after a two-season absence.

Another source of excitement for Tottenham fans are the new transfers, including Brighton and Hove Albion's Yves Bissouma - as well as wingbacks Ivan Perisic and Djed Spence from Inter Milan and Middlesborough, respectively.

In typical Antonio Conte fashion, he will want his side to be ruthless and kill any chance of Southampton spoiling what will look to be a hotly anticipated day for Spurs fans.

Expectations for the game

Southampton took all three points on their last visit to The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Antonio Conte is looking to avoid a repeat.

"My expectation is to have a different result to last season. This is my first expectation. I hope so because last season we drew away and lost at home to Southampton.

"We're talking about a really good team and a really good manager. We have to pay great attention but we have to start in the best way, get three points. "

Team news

There have been several rumours circulating on social media regarding the availability of various players going into the game. However, there is only one certain absentee.

"At the moment we only have one player who will definitely miss Southampton and that is [Oliver] Skipp."

Antonio does admit, however, that the Englishman may not be the only player to miss the game.

"[Yves] Bissouma, another day (before the game) nothing serious but I do not want to take a risk with anyone for the next games."

"He [Matt Doherty] needs to have a bit of patience but is working very well to be fit quickly."

"We have to pay a bit of attention to give him [Ivan Perisic] to give him the right time to adapt himself to recover 100% after his injury."

Transfers

Much has been said about Tottenham's transfer dealings this summer with a different approach being taken compared to previous years, and it seems that Antonio Conte is happy with Tottenham's transfer business.

"For sure we are trying to do things with common sense. I know only this way. It is not simple."

The Italian is warry, however of making mistakes in transfers, perhaps a hint to the club's purchases of previous big money signings.

"You have to try not to make mistakes, especially in the transfer window with the club, but I think we are doing good things."

Antonio Conte was also asked about the future of out-of-favour players such as Sergio Reguilion, Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovanni Lo Celso.

"I think that sometimes it's better for the player and club to find the right solution for both. Because to keep players unhappy is not good, and I cannot ensure they'll play regularly here.

"We're talking about a good player, but maybe they deserve to play regularly, so we want to find a solution for the club and the player."

Not staying long at clubs

Liverpool and Manchester City have enjoyed lots of success in recent years, and many attribute this to giving lots of time to their respective managers Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.

"If you are with the same manager for many years, you bring continuity, and you continue ambition. It is the best situation for the club to improve and grow season by season."

The Tottenham manager does not have a reputation for staying with his teams very long, when asked about this, Conte said:

"I do not like the people who told me one thing, and then during the season, after one year or two, changed it.

"If you tell me a good lie, you do not have a lot of luck with me. I hate lying and liars."

What does success at Tottenham look like?

Much was said last season about Conte and Tottenham's success at finishing inside the top four. However, Conte is looking at the bigger picture.

"I think my target, and the club's target, is to try and continue to improve, to develop the process that we started seven months ago.

"It means we have to try to develop in every aspect because my experience tells me we're going in the right direction."

Antonio Conte and Tottenham will both be hoping that the coming season will see improvements and an end to the near-decade trophy drought Tottenham have suffered.
