Leicester City blew Nottingham Forest away in a fast-paced first half which saw the hosts score three goals in an eventual 4-0 win at the King Power Stadium.

It was a hugely important victory for The Foxes, who had only one point to their name in the Premier League before Monday night's match.

James Maddison set the tone with his deflected effort in the 23rd minute which gave Brendan Rodgers' side the lead.

Harvey Barnes was amongst the goals a minute later, cutting in from the left-hand side and curling an effort past Dean Henderson.

The first half flurry of goals was completed by a beautiful free kick from Maddison, who was superb on the night.

Patson Daka came off the bench to complete the rout, skillfully flicking the ball in to complete a miserable day for Steve Cooper and his players.

Story of the match

Jamie Vardy was handed a start for the hosts, after Daka dropped to the bench in Brendan Rodgers' only change to the side that lost 6-2 to Tottenham.

Cooper made three alterations to his starting lineup that threw away a lead to lose to Fulham 2-3 before the international break.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had an effort from range in the opening minute of the tie, but it did not test Henderson.

Lewis O'Brien had the first shooting opportunity for The Reds from the edge of the box, but it was blocked and sent behind for a corner which came to nothing.

Maddison tried to slip the ball into Vardy, but he was crowded out by Forest defenders, which prevented the 35-year-old from getting a shot away.

Dewsbury-Hall had a golden chance in the fifth minute, as Maddison skipped past his man and aimed a floated cross for the back post, which the midfielder somehow headed wide.

James Justin hit a dipping effort from the edge of the box for The Foxes, but the shot was deflected over for a corner which the hosts wasted.

Dewsbury-Hall went for goal from range, but the ball flashed wide of the mark.

The opening stages were dominated by Rodgers' side, who were desperate to secure three points, having picked up just one from their opening seven matches before kick off on Monday night.

Maddison and Vardy combined again from a free kick, which left Vardy in acres of space, but his header went wide.

The Englishman could only fire straight at Henderson soon after, having run onto a through ball, a position Vardy is normally in his element in.

Forest's high line from set pieces was proving a real weakness, as once again Leicester looked to exploit it from a deep free kick.

This time Barnes and Vardy went close to connecting with the ball, with no red shirt to stop them in sight.

Danny Ward was off his line quickly to catch a cross for The Foxes.

The keeper has been under pressure in recent weeks after a poor start to the campaign.

Taiwo Awoniyi had the best chance of the game so far when his shot from inside the box hit the post.

It was the perfect opportunity for the Nigerian to open the scoring against the run of play after breaking free from Wout Faes, but he could not get his effort on target.

The Foxes turn chances to goals

Forest were made to pay for their missed chance, as Maddison scored a potentially vital goal to put Leicester 1-0 up in the 24th minute.

The hosts led the East Midlands derby after the Englishman found himself in space on the edge of the box, and his effort ricocheted off Scott McKenna and in.

Seconds later Barnes doubled the lead in some style.

The King Power Stadium was in dreamland as Barnes cut in from the left-hand side and emphatically curled the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Vardy volleyed goalward on the half an hour mark, but it was easily caught by Henderson and the flag was up for offside against the striker.

Cheikhou Kouyate was booked for the visitors after bringing Dewsbury-Hall down on the edge of the box, presenting Leicester with an opening.

The free kick was superbly taken by Maddison, who had been fantastic.

The effort curled over the wall and brushed the inside of the post on its way in to make it 3-0 to The Foxes in just 35 minutes.

Jesse Lingard looked to pull one back as Brennan Johnson cut the ball back to him, but his first touch was poor, and allowed the hosts to block the following shot.

It was 3-0 to Leicester at the break, in an almost perfect first half for The Foxes, which proved what Rodgers' side are capable of.

It was more misery for Cooper at the interval, as The Reds had vanished without a trace in the opening 45 minutes of an important match against a struggling Leicester side.

Cooper made three changes before the restart, introducing Serge Aurier, Ryan Yates and Remo Freuler in a desperate attempt to turn the tide in the match.

Barnes looked to place the ball beyond Henderson, but the former Manchester United goalkeeper was equal to it.

Faes found himself on the end of Maddison's corner, but he fired just over.

Awoniyi and Johnson had superb chances to pull a goal back, racing in on goal with the linesman's flag down.

The former Union Berlin man saw his effort saved one-on-one, and Johnson failed to bring the ball under control, which would have presented him with an empty net.

There was little to report on the game as it approached the 60-minute mark, with Leicester comfortable on the ball and Forest more content to sit back and prevent a thrashing.

Emmanuel Dennis would have been pleased to see the offside flag raised against him after his poor finish dragged wide, having been in on goal, however he was adjudged to have been offside anyway.

Maddison shimmied his way past a couple of challenges on the edge of the area, but his eventual effort went wide.

Substitute Daka made it four in the 72nd minute with a wonderful flick.

The cross from the right wing was just behind the striker, but it was no problem for the Zambian, who flicked the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Ward was on hand to deny Johnson with a strong save to keep the clean sheet intact.

Morgan Gibbs-White looked to grab a late consolation goal for The Reds, but Ward was able to collect his headed effort.

Steve Cook was booked for a cynical foul on Boubakary Soumare who had looked to launch a counter-attack.

Full time saw Rodgers secure a huge win, which proved his ability to lead Leicester despite a disappointing start to the campaign.

For Cooper, it was another dismal display from his side which heaps pressure on his position in charge of The Reds.

Player of the match

It was a special and important night for The Foxes, and Maddison was at the heart of it.

His deflected effort put Leicester ahead, and he was at the centre of all of the hosts' positive play.

The 25-year-old occupied good positions on the pitch and made the most of the opportunities presented to him, laying the ball off to Vardy and linking up play very effectively.

His free kick to make the score 3-0 was hit with pinpoint accuracy and brushed off the post before flying in.

It was the performance of a top player in a massive match for both his side and manager Rodgers.
