Manchester City defeated Nottingham Forest 6-0 in their first meeting since 2009, thanks to Erling Haaland's second Premier League hat-trick in as many games.

City maintain their unbeaten start to the season, and with their fourth win in their fifth game, they appear poised to compete for a third consecutive title.

Forest will come away from this fixture deflated with their biggest loss since 2019. However, the Reds will be well aware that they entered the home of the champions, and will look to bounce back against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Here are four things we learned from the game.

Haaland is on another planet

Erling Haaland is the most in form striker in the world right now. His three goals against Forest mean he has now scored back-to-back Premier League hat-tricks, bringing his tally to nine goals in Manchester City's first five games.

Last time out, the Norwegian scored a hat-trick in the final half-hour against Crystal Palace, and he did so again in 38 minutes against Forest. Six goals in 68 minutes of action.

It only took Haaland 101 touches to score nine Premier League goals, and no other striker has scored more goals in their first five games in this division. Sergio Agüero and Micky Quinn shared the record with eight goals in five games.

Another record that the striker broke was the fewest games in which he scored two Premier League hat-tricks. Demba Ba previously held the record with two hat-tricks in 21 games, but this was surpassed by Haaland's two hat-tricks in five Premier League games.

Against Forest, there seemed to be a genuine belief within the Etihad that Haaland would score every time City entered the final third.

Finally, in the 69th minute, the 22-year-old was relieved of his duties and replaced by Kevin De Bruyne. Haaland finished with 16 touches, six passes, four shots on goal, and three goals — an efficient performance.

With at least one goal contribution in each of his league appearances so far, the new man in Manchester has more than lived up to the hype.

City domination

City dominated possession from the start, pinning Forest deep inside their own half, as expected. While Forest tried their hardest to defend the constant pressure, it only took Pep Guardiola's side 12 minutes to break through, and it was all downhill from there.

City finished with 76 percent possession and 17 shots at goal. Throughout the game, they limited Forest to eight attempts, and the Reds only forced Enderson to make one save.

The home team completed 712 passes in comparison to Forest's 185, and City also won more corners, winning ten to Forest's one.

City routinely dominate their opponents, especially at home, so Forest should not be discouraged. Manchester City are simply a well-oiled machine that look even scarier now that they have a striker.

Neco Williams a positive for Forest

Neco Williams managed to provide a positive for Forest in a game where it was difficult for any Forest player to stand out. Despite being tasked with defending the talented Phil Foden, Williams made more successful tackles (5) and won more duels (9) than any other player on the field.

The 21-year-old also had more successful recoveries (10) and interceptions (10) than any other player on the pitch, and he assisted in covering Joe Worrall throughout the game.

Going forward, the wing-back made three key passes and completed both crosses he attempted. One of his crosses was pinpoint with his weak foot and found Renan Lodi at the far post, who could only direct his header into the side netting.

The Wales international has been a bright spark for the Reds in every game since his arrival, and despite the fact that Forest were dominated by City, he managed to stand out.

Forest need to work on their set-pieces

Though Forest's start to the season has been largely positive, Steve Cooper's team has not looked particularly dangerous from set-pieces.

In fact, City's final goal of the game came from a dangerous Forest free-kick.

Emmanuel Dennis' attempt hit the City wall before De Bruyne latched on to the loose ball and raced forward. The ball eventually fell into the path of Julian Alvarez, who smashed the ball into the top corner, meaning Forest had conceded a goal within 18 seconds of taking a free-kick from the edge of City's area.

This wasn't Forest's first questionable set-piece of the season, and it is something that needs to be addressed quickly.
