Liverpool's top four hopes hang in the balance after a humiliating 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves began the game in the ascendancy and their strong start paid off when a Joel Matip own goal gave them the lead in the opening stages.

They doubled their lead when Craig Dawson smashed home on his debut, after more poor defending from the Reds

Ruben Neves finished off a wonderful counter-attack to complete the rout around the 70th-minute mark.

The result leaves the hosts in 15th place in the Premier League, two points ahead of Everton, who occupy the final relegation spot.

Meanwhile, the visitors sit 10th, 10 points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United, who play later tonight.

  • Story of the Match

The hosts started the game well and had two chances in the first five minutes.

Matheus Cunha had a long-range effort comfortably saved by Alisson, before he set up Pablo Sarabia who dragged his shot wide.

Julen Lopetegui's side took the lead after six minutes, Hwang Hee-Chan latched onto Sarabia's pass, and his cross deflected off Matip into his own goal.

The Wanderers increased their lead after 12 minutes, Max Kilman's effort from Cunha's cross ricocheted back to Craig Dawson, who smashed the ball into the net.

The Reds found their way into the match after going two goals down, Darwin Nunez's curling effort was saved by Jose Sa, then Mohamed Salah curled over the bar after being played through by Naby Keita

The Guinean then found himself in space in the hosts' box, but his swivelling shot was poor.

It was nearly even worse for Jurgen Klopp's side when Matip lost the ball under pressure from Matheus Nunes just outside of his own box, but Alisson was there to save his blushes.

On the half-hour mark, Dawson nearly tripled the lead but could not get his header on the target, he was then booked just before the break.

Hwang was replaced by Adama Traore in the 39th minute, after picking up a hamstring injury.

After the interval, Liverpool had a shout for a penalty turned down, Keita's shot hit the arm of Kilman, however, it had come off his chest first.

The visitors pushed forward, Salah snatching at the ball from Keita's pass over the hosts' defence but ultimately was ruled offside.

The Egyptian then curled a shot wide after Cody Gakpo had played him through, Dawson had sloppily given the ball away to the Dutch international.

Wolves strengthened their grip on the contest with the introduction of Raul Jimenez and João Moutinho, who replaced Cunha and Sarabia. Meanwhile, the Reds replaced Keita with Jordan Henderson in an attempt to get back into the match.

The Mexican had a speculative effort after 63 minutes, he saw Alisson off his line and tried to volley home from range, but it failed to trouble the visitors.

He then failed to capitalise after Andy Robertson had given the ball away in a dangerous position.

Liverpool had a big chance in the 67th minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold released Nunez, who could only fire his effort straight at Sa in the Wolves net.

A free-kick from Alexander-Arnold then smashed against the wall before he volleyed the rebound low and very wide.

The hosts then tripled their lead just after 70 minutes with a terrific counter attacking goal. Stefan Bajcetic gave the ball away, Moutinho sent Traore away, and Neves slotted past Alisson.

Harvey Elliott was introduced in the 77th minute for Bajcetic, before James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kostas Tsmikas replaced Thiago Alcantara, Gakpo and Robertson in the 86th minute.

Daniel Podence and Jonny replaced Mario Lemina and Rayan Aït-Nouri as the hosts saw out their victory with a clean sheet.

The Portuguese midfielder finished off a great performance with a goal.

He made four tackles, two blocks, six clearances and won all three of his aerial duels.

He is the kind of player that Jurgen Klopp could do with, in his fledgling midfield right now.
