Mason Mount produced a fine performance at Villa Park, scoring both goals in a 0-2 win for Chelsea against Aston Villa.

The result piles the pressure on Villa boss Steven Gerrard, as his side failed to impress once again.

Kepa Arrizabalaga and Mount played well, whilst Tyrone Mings struggled.

Here are the full player ratings from the encounter:

Emi Martinez- 5/10

Very little he could have done about the first goal, racing off his line in an attempt to spare Mings’ blushes, but he could not quite keep it out.

Stepped too far to the right for the free kick that Mount scored to double the lead, an effort he probably could have saved.

Matty Cash- 5/10

After a largely ineffective first half, he looked to have a greater impact on the match after the break, floating the ball into dangerous areas a few times.

Achieved very little after his spell on the ball after the interval.

Ezri Konsa- 5/10

Made a good tackle to deny Raheem Sterling late on, but otherwise had no real impact on the tie.

Tyrone Mings- 2/10

Made the error for the opening goal, a poor lapse of judgment which gifted Mason Mount the first goal of the game.

The former England international completely lost the flight of the ball which inadvertently played his fellow countryman in on goal to score.

Was also booed by the home crowd for passing the ball backwards instead of being progressive as the hosts were in the ascendancy in the tie.

Even gave away the free kick that led to the second goal.

Not his day at all.

Ashley Young- 4/10

Found Ollie Watkins in space on the left hand side early on in the second half, but he could not take advantage of the opening.

Led the charge with Danny Ings soon after, in what could have been an effective counter attack, but his final ball was wayward.

A disappointing display from the experienced full back.

John McGinn- 5/10

Created and wasted an opportunity entirely on his own, winning the ball in the box but selfishly shooting instead of cutting the ball back which surely would have levelled the tie.

Had a half chance to volley the hosts level on the edge of the box, but the goalkeeper, once again, was equal to it.

Did very little else, and was taken off for Coutinho in the latter stages of the game.

Douglas Luiz- 5/10

Hardly featured throughout the game.

Did not produce a big performance after being rewarded with a new deal in midweek.

Jacob Ramsey- 6/10

Seemed to be involved in the chances the hosts did create, and drew a few fouls which allowed The Villains to get the ball into the box.

Unfortunate not to score with a driving effort in the 20th minute which forced a superb stop from Arrizabalaga.

Was taken off for Dendoncker late on.

A decent showing from the young midfielder despite the score line.

Leon Bailey- 4/10

Hit the frame of the goal early on with a header at the back post.

A sitter which presented Villa the perfect opportunity to equalise.

Did very little else and was replaced after the second goal.

Danny Ings- 6/10

Forced a wonderful save from the in-form Spanish goalkeeper he faced when he flicked the ball goal wards from close range, the Englishman must have thought he had scored.

Occupied good spaces and tried to make things happen, flashing a header over the bar in the final minute of normal time before the break.

Ollie Watkins- 3/10

It was not down to a lack of effort, but Watkins was wasteful and disappointing on Sunday afternoon.

He was in space at the back post after a ball was floated into him by Bailey, but his first touch was loose which allowed Arrizabalaga to collect the ball.

He also beat the goalkeeper to a header from a corner early on in the second half, but could only head wide.

Substitutes

Emi Buendia- 4/10

Was brought on by Gerrard as the game looked to be slipping away from Villa.

Did very little to change the tie, but having been introduced at 0-2 down it would have been a big ask of the Argentine to make something meaningful happen.

Philippe Coutinho- 4/10

Was brought on with 17 minutes to go in place of McGinn, had no impact with the small cameo he was given.

Leander Dendoncker- N/A

Replaced Ramsey in the final 15 minutes with the game all but decided.

Did nothing to change the outcome.

  • Chelsea

Kepa Arrizabalaga- 8/10

Made three incredible saves around the 20 minute mark having been largely inactive beforehand, the sort of saves the Spaniard could have only dreamed of making when his confidence was shattered a few years ago.

Was on hand to make a stunning stop to tip Ings’ header over the bar from close range also.

Had a great game, building on his recent run of starts between the sticks.

Trevor Chalobah- 6/10

Got a vital touch on the ball as Konsa looked to get a goal back for the hosts with 20 minutes left to go.

Had a quiet game, but did the necessary when needed.

Thiago Silva- 6/10

Presented McGinn with a golden chance after being barged off the ball far too easily around the half an hour mark.

Otherwise had a solid game, The Blues will hope the injury he sustained late on which he played through was not serious.

Marc Cucurella- 4/10

Struggled to have any impact on the tie and was subsequently taken off by Graham Potter at the break in a double substitution.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek- 4/10

A very average performance from the former Fulham loanee, who did nothing worth reporting on in the tie.

Mateo Kovacic- 5/10

Tried to play Raheem Sterling in on goal in the first half but the ball was just too long.

Struggled to make his mark on the match.

Mason Mount- 9/10

The perfect trip to the Midlands for the 23-year-old.

Capitalised on the mistake by Mings to put his side in front.

Was proactive in his pressing to earn himself the chance to score, finishing the opportunity well.

Doubled the lead and netted his brace with a free kick from range against the run of play.

Did not feature much apart from the goals, but when called upon, he delivered.

Ben Chilwell- 5/10

Was booked after a late challenge on Ramsey caught the youngster, his studs were showing, but the fact that the boot was not high likely saved Chilwell from further punishment.

Did not do too much else, but managed to keep a clean sheet.

Kai Havertz- 4/10

Had a largely uneventful first half in which he did not create any real chances, and was also brought off at the break in a more defensive change along with Cucurella.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang- 3/10

Was quite wasteful in possession at times, passing the ball straight to Ings at one stage which nearly gifted the hosts an equaliser at 0-1.

He was taken off just before the hour mark, having created more chances for the opponents than his own side.

It was a day to forget for the former Arsenal striker.

Raheem Sterling- 6/10

Made some positive runs and looked to find space in behind The Villains’ defence, but often the visitors failed to pick him out with their passes.

When he was given the ball in space on the edge of the box, he rattled the frame of the goal as the match approached the interval.

Missed a good headed chance to rub salt in the wounds, and was replaced soon after.

Substitutes

Kalidou Koulibaly- 6/10

Brought on at half time as part of a double change by Potter, and started well, cutting out a through ball from Cash.

Made a rash challenge on Ramsey, blocking the run of the 21-year-old and was booked for the tackle.

Kept a clean sheet and did what was needed of him.

Cesar Azpilicueta- 5/10

The second player introduced at the break, did not have a huge impact on the game but did keep a clean sheet.

Conor Gallagher- 5/10

The third substitute, was brought on for Aubameyang around the 60 minute mark, also did very little to make his mark on proceedings.

Jorginho- 5/10

Replaced Kovacic with 25 minutes to go, and did not add much to the tie which in truth had petered out by his introduction.

Armando Broja- N/A

Brought on to replace Sterling in the 88th minute and had little to do.
