A winning start to life in Merseyside and back in the Premier League for Sean Dyche was ensured with an impressive defensive display to beat the league leaders 1-0.

Everton fans will be ecstatic with the three points - their first win in nine league games - which lifts them out of the relegation zone.

Mikel Arteta’s side struggled with the constant pressure from the Toffees, which saw Dyche’s side carve out a few opportunities on the Arsenal goal, whilst not allowing much room for the Gunners to move the ball around.

It was not until the 60th minute that Everton took a deserved lead, through a header from James Tarkowski.

The definition of a Sean Dyche performance - a 1-0 win, in his return to management - which will certainly leave him delighted.

Here is how the players rated at Goodison Park:

Everton

Jordan Pickford - 6/10

A surprisingly quiet day in net for Pickford today, who would have expected to be a bit busier against the league leaders. He did well when called into action, with his distribution as good as always.

Seamus Coleman - 7/10

A very strong display from the veteran right-back, who did well in keeping Gabriel Martinelli quiet today. Defensively superb and could have had an assist after a great ball into Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Conor Coady - 7/10

He cleared his lines very well, with some great challenges to stop Arsenal from getting near his goal. His goal-line clearance stopped a certain Bukayo Saka goal.

James Tarkowski - 8/10

The man who got the goal and deservedly so. A strong header from the back post could not be stopped, following a Dwight McNeil corner. Apart from his goal, he was strong at the back, heading and clearing danger away at any opportunity.

Vitaly Mykolenko - 7/10

Much like his captain, the Ukranian had a great defensive performance against a tricky winger, allowing Saka very few opportunities on goal.

Alex Iwobi - 7/10

Keeping up with the common theme in this side, defensively Iwobi did very well. Showed great work rate and stamina to constantly retreat and support his full-back, which worked brilliantly.

Idrissa Gueye - 7/10

He won the ball back countless times and did not seem like he would ever run out of energy. A key player in the closing moments of the game.

Amadou Onana - 9/10

The definition of a box-to-box midfielder, the Belgian was everywhere in this game. He won the ball multiple times and drove forward well with some brilliant runs to create chances for his side. A man of the match performance.

Dwight McNeil - 8/10

A man who knows exactly how his manager likes his wingers to play, and he did just that. Always tracking back to support his full-back, whilst providing a threat at the other end. His performance was topped off with a brilliant corner into Tarkowski, a goal made in Burnley.

Abdoulaye Doucoure - 6/10

A good performance from Doucoure, who is back in favour under the new manager. He helped the press and carried the ball forward very well, but maybe should have scored with a free header in the Arsenal box.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin - 7/10

An impressive showing from Calvert-Lewin, who has struggled this season. Despite not scoring, he was a constant handful for the Arsenal defenders, leading the press well whilst coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions.

Substitutions

Neal Maupay (62') - 4/10

Did not offer too much when coming on, his only real highlight was a scuffle with Zinchenko that earned him a yellow card.

Arsenal

Aaron Ramsdale - 5/10

He will be disappointed to concede, but was mostly solid when he was asked upon. Cannot be faulted too much for the goal.

Ben White - 5/10

A very average performance from the right-back. Looked comfortable on the ball and played some good passes down the right-hand side.

William Saliba - 6/10

He was confident in possession and played some great passes around the pitch, but looked a bit shaky at certain points. It was a good performance from the Frenchman, although not his best.

Gabriel Magalhaes - 4/10

Not the Brazilian's best performance. Switched off on a few occasions and allowing Doucoure to drift into the box for a free header was the worst of the bunch.

Oleksandr Zinchenko - 5/10

Not too much to say about Zinchenko. He linked up with teammates well with some tidy passes, but did not have too much impact further up the pitch.

Thomas Partey - 6/10

Always calm when on the ball and played some good passes around the pitch, solid performance.

Granit Xhaxa - 5/10

Energetic in midfield as he tried to bring the ball forward for his side. However, found it hard against a strong Everton midfield.

Martin Odegaard - 5/10

Had some good glimpses of quality on the break, but struggled to create too much against a resolute Everton defence.

Bukayo Saka - 5/10

Had a few good moments in the game, but found it difficult to create much against Mykolenko and McNeil on his side. Although, unlucky not to score after Coady’s goal-line clearance.

Gabriel Martinelli - 4/10

A very quiet game for the Brazilian, who struggled to cope with the doubling up from the Everton wingers.

Eddie Nketiah - 4/10

He struggled up top today, with not too much service up to him. His only real chance was blazed high and wide after finding himself one on one with Pickford.

Substitutions

Takehiro Tomiyasu (85') - N/A

Fabio Vieira (77') - N/A

Jorginho (59') - 4/10

Did not offer too much other than an option in midfield. Often played the safe pass rather than driving the team forward.

Leandro Trossard - 5/10 (59')

An energetic cameo from the bench which saw him get a few chances to bring the score level, but could not beat Pickford.
