Sophomore guard Kris Dunn has flirted with triple-doubles at many points during the 2014-15 season for the Providence Friars. In games against Navy and St. John’s earlier in the year he came within three rebounds of the feat. Last Thursday night, it was the assists that got in the way during Providence’s overtime win over Xavier. He finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.

On Thursday afternoon, Dunn finally achieved the triple-double feat finishing with a career high 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists to lift Providence to an 83-72 win over the DePaul Blue Demons. The game was originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday but was rescheduled due to the winter storm which dropped two feet of snow on the Providence, Rhode Island area.

Dunn’s triple-double was the first by a Providence player since December 22nd, 2006 when Geoff McDermott scored 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 101-92 win over Harvard. It is also the ninth in school history.

Providence had five players score in double figures on the afternoon including 11 points off the bench from both Tyler Harris and Kyron Cartwright. LaDontae Henton scored 12 points to move him within two points of the 7th spot in Providence history in scoring. He is right behind Joe Hassett for 7th place and is 13 points behind Marvin Barnes in 6th place.

The Friars pulled out to a ten-point lead early in the contest thank to two big buckets from Kyron Cartwright. Providence controlled both ends of the glass as well to keep DePaul’s possessions down during the 8-0 run. Darrick Wood responded with a three pointer after a timeout but Providence converted on their next three possessions aided by two Jamee Crockett turnovers to extend the lead to 28-15.

Providence would extend the lead to as many as 19 points in the final two minutes of the first half before settling for a 41-23 margin at the break.

DePaul did everything they could to get back in the game but Providence always had an answer in the second half. Finally with about six minutes to go, DePaul sprang to life after a Darrick Wood jumper. The Blue Demons corralled a big rebound on the defensive glass that led to a foul on Tommy Hamilton IV. He sank both free throws to cut the lead to 12.

On the ensuing possession, Kyron Cartwright turned the ball over leading to a Billy Garrett Jr three-pointer to bring the lead to nine, the first time DePaul had been within ten points since the 9:08 point of the first half. Tommy Hamilton converted on a three point play after a Kris Dunn lay-up to cut the margin to eight with 4:06 to play but Kris Dunn’s three-pointer with 3:37 remaining would be the dagger.

Tommy Hamilton IV led DePaul with 22 points off the bench. The Blue Demons had three other players score in double figures as well with Bill Garrett Jr’s 16 points, Jamee Crockett’s 14 points, and Myke Henry’s 10 points. DePaul took a beating on the glass as they were outrebounded 39-19 on the afternoon.

DePaul has a quick turnaround as they will host the 7th ranked Villanova Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at the Allstate Arena. Meanwhile, Providence sets off on an important three-game road trip which starts on Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden against the St. John’s Red Storm. They will finish the trek with games at Georgetown and Xavier next week.
