Starlin Castro singled home the game-winning run to give the Chicago Cubs an 11-inning 7-6 walk-off win over the San Diego Padres. The Cubs overcame a four-run Padres rally in the ninth to win it in extra innings.

With the bases loaded and one out, Castro lined a first-pitch breaking ball from Craig Kimbrel into left field to drive home Anthony Rizzo, who walked with one out to get on base. After Rizzo stole second, Kris Bryant beat out an infield single to move Rizzo to third base. Kimbrel walked pinch hitter David Ross to load the bases, and Castro followed with his walk-off hit.

Trailing 6-2 at the beginning of the ninth, San Diego scored four times to force extra innings. The Padres got the first two men on off Phil Coke, forcing Cubs manager Joe Maddon to go to his closer, Hector Rondon (BS: 1), who could not get out of the jam. Three runs scored, two charged to Coke, before the Cubs could get even one out. Justin Upton (single), Will Middlebrooks (double), and Jedd Gyrko (ground out) all drove home runs in succession. Yangervis Solarte tied the game with a single after falling behind 0-2.

New Cubs catcher Miguel Montero homered twice and drove in three runs as the Cubs leaped out to a 6-2 lead after seven innings. Montero broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run (1) to the opposite field. One inning later, he added his second home run (2) with Castro aboard to make the score 6-2, a lead the Cubs' bullpen could not hold. Castro singled home Rizzo earlier in the inning.

Bryant had a much better second day in the Big Leagues as he drew three walks and notched his first career hit and RBI in the fifth, scoring Dexter Fowler on the looping single.

Bryant's infield hit in the 11th set up the game-winner from Castro. Bryant finished the day 2 for 3.

San Diego jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Matt Kemp took Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks over the left-field wall (1) in the first inning. Wil Myers reached on an error to open the inning but was thrown out at third on Yonder Alonso's single that followed. Alonso scored on Kemp's home run.

Zac Rosscup (1-0, 0.00 ERA) won it with two scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th. He allowed just one hit and struck out two. Hendricks pitched six strong innings for the Cubs. He allowed two earned runs on three hits. He walked no one and struck out eight. He was in line for the win until San Diego rallied in the ninth off the Cubs' bullpen to take that win away from him.

Kimbrel (L: 0-1, 1.42) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning, allowing one earned run on two hits. He also walked two. Tyson Ross started and pitched 5 2/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs on five hits, including Montero's first home run, while walking five and fanning nine.

The series ends tomorrow afternoon at 2:20 p.m. EDT. Andrew Cashner (0-2, 4.09) will start for the Padres while Jon Lester (0-1, 7.84) will try for his first win as a Cub.
