Rookie pitcher Mike Montgomery has been impressive so far for the Seattle Mariners. Being down 2 of their top 3 pitchers, the Mariners would take anything they could get from the first year major leaguer.

Montgomery has given Seattle that, and more.

Going against the Kansas City Royals, the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2008 draft, Montgomery showed why he was a first round pick.

Montgomery made some history for the Seattle Mariners today, joining the King, Felix Hernandez, as the only two pitchers this year to toss a complete game, going 9 innings, allowing only 4 hits, striking out 10 batters and walking none. While having a few scares early in the game, Montgomery ended up retiring 17 straight batters at one point.

Montgomery also became the 10th rookie in Mariners history to have a complete game.

Another big note for the Mariners today was their bats coming alive. Mariners demoted their hitting hitting coach Howard Johnson a few days ago to hire a Mariners legend, and one of the greatest hitters of all-time, Edgar Martinez. While Edgar might not bring an immediate change, it would be good to see the Mariners on the upward trend in the batting department as soon as possible to stay in the playoff race.

Brad Miller started things off with a bases loaded walk of off Jeremy Guthrie in the bottom of the 4th to give the Mariners a 1-0

Dustin Ackley, who only had 1 multi hit game this season for the Mariners prior to today continued the scoring barrage. Ackley went 3 for 4, with 2 RBIs, bringing those RBIs with a 2-run HR today in the 5th inning, it was his 6th HR of the season.

It was also good for the Mariners to see all-star Robinson Cano playing like he did in previous years these last two nights. Cano had 1 of the only 2 hits for the Mariners last night, which was a solo HR in the 1st inning. Cano added to that today by going 2 for 5 with a run scored, moving his average back up slightly to .246.

The Mariners look to take the series win tomorrow night at home with Roenis Elias (4-4, 3.56) on the mound, coming off the best start of his career. He will face Danny Duffy (2-3, 5.86) of the Royals, who hasn't pitched since May 16th, he is coming off of two rehab starts in Triple-A ball.

W: Mike Montgomery (2-2, 2.04)
