Mikhail Aleshin will make his comeback to the Verizon IndyCar Series at this year's season finale at Sonoma Raceway, driving a third car fielded by Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

Aleshin included in test-day lineup for SPM

The 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 champion is going to be in a third car alongside James Jakes and Ryan Briscoe, the latter being a replacement for the injured James Hinchcliffe.

The Russian driver will also take part at the test day on August 13. Five current teams, including SPM, will test at the track ahead of the double-points paying finale that is set for August 30.

More than just a one-off race?

After his scary crash during practice for last year's finale at Auto Club Speedway, Aleshin went over to the European Le Mans Series with SMP Racing, also racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the team, but he is now wishing to get back into IndyCar full-time for 2016.

"As for next season, now we are working hard to continue racing in IndyCar, and I hope this race will be a significant step towards this goal," Aleshin said.

Aleshin made his Indy car racing debut back in 2014 with the SPM team, finishing second at the second Houston race of the doubleheader weekend, marking his best finish in his Indy car career so far.
