The San Francisco Giants took two of the first three games in the series against the St. Louis Cardinals and wanted to take the series on the road against a tough competitor in the NL Central. The Giants currently own the best record in the National League and maintained their top position following today’s win.

The Giants had a solid performance in terms of pitching, their bats came through early and often and San Francisco blanked St. Louis with an 8-0 win that gave them the four-game set at Busch Stadium.

The Giants jumped all over starter Lance Lynn in the top of the first inning scoring four runs. Buster Posey drove Angel Pagan with an RBI single, a groundout from Brandon Crawford scored Hunter Pence and later both Posey and Crawford crossed home plate on a two-run single from Joaquin Arias.

The Giants didn’t stop there and added two more runs in the third. Another RBI single from Arias scored Crawford and Angel Pagan drove in Brandon Hicks with an RBI groundout. A double from Brandon Crawford allowed Posey to score his second run of the game in the fourth to make it 7-0 for San Francisco.

The seven early runs meant that Lance Lynn was unable to go deep on his pitch count. Lynn only pitched 3.2 innings and struck out two while walking four, allowed eight hits and seven runs. Clearly not the ideal for the Cardinals and while the bullpen managed to limit the damage – only one run earned in 6.2 innings – the game was all but decided early on.

The final run of the game came in the sixth inning when a triple from Gregor Blanco scored Pablo Sandoval.

The Giants were also solid on the mound after Tim Hudson completed seven innings where he only allowed three hits while fanning six batters. Javier Lopez and David Huff each threw a scoreless inning and the Giants cruised their way to a solid win for them.

The Cardinals lost three of the four games against the NL-leading Giants and they’re still far from the top spot in the division. The team’s offense has looked helpless in recent games and they need to turn things around before it’s too late.
