The Washington Nationals have signed 30-year-old outfielder Nate Schierholtz to a minor league deal. This deal is presumably at the league-minimum, but the Chicago Cubs will have to pay the reminder of his $5 million salary after releasing him earlier this month.

The Cubs expected much more from Schierholtz this year, as he has hit just .192 with six homers in 341 plate appearances. However, Schierholtz has batted .254 over his eight year career while having the defensive versatility to play all three outfield positions. He made major strides in his batting last season with a career-high 21 homeruns, but has fallen off drastically this season.

While a minor move, acquiring Schierholtz is a good move for the Nationals as they look to strengthen their outfield depth. The Nationals fourth outfielder, Nate McLouth has struggled this season as he recovers from right shoulder surgery. McLouth is batting just .173 this season. Schierholtz is likely to be called up to the majors when the roster expands in September. He will provide the Nationals with a left-handed outfielder that can play all three outfield positions as well as potentially providing a bigger offensive spark than McLouth has been able to provide so far this season.

The Nationals currently hold a six game lead in the NL East. This move will add outfield depth to their organization. Schierholtz's left-handed bat should help them in the long run looking towards the end of the regular season and throughout the playoffs.
