The Detroit Tigers (79-65) topped the Kansas City Royals (79-63) 9-5 at Comerica Park on Monday using a huge six run third inning to propel them to the finish. The Tigers got a solid start out of Justin Verlander who gave up four runs on six hits over seven innings of work.

Eric Hosmer was the stand out player of the day for the Royals, even though his team could not provide much to help. He went 3 for 4 with one RBI for the Royals in their loss today. Left fielder Alex Gordon was the main reason Hosmer racked up the RBI. Gordon drew two walks in the game and allowed Hosmer to hit him home.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie could not make it out of the third inning. Tigers hot bats chased him out as he allowed eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits through 2 2/3 innings pitched on Monday afternoon.

The Tigers got offensive help from Nick Castellanos, Victor Martinez, and Torii Hunter just to name a few. Castellanos, who now has a batting average of .264, went 2 for 4 with two RBI's. Martinez added three hits to the Tigers offense along with a single RBI. Hunter, .282, went 3 for 5 and also added a single RBI. Don Kelly provided a run in the third inning with a double.

The Tigers send Max Scherzer (15-5, 3.25) to the mound to face off against the Royals' Jason Vargas (11-7, 3.14) tomorrow  at 7:08 PM EST.
