Atlanta Braves right-hander Shelby Miller (5-1) was magnificent Sunday afternoon as he came one out away from throwing his first career no-hitter. With two outs in the ninth inning Miami Marlins first baseman Justin Bour singled the first pitch he saw up the middle to break up the no-hit bid. Miller’s second complete game shutout of the season capped off a Braves 6-0 victory and three-game sweep of the Marlins on the road.

Shelby’s pitching line came out as such; 9.0 innings, two hits, zero runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Miller finished the game throwing only 94 pitches, 70 of which were strikes. Of the 29 batters he faced this afternoon, 26 of them he threw a first pitch strike.

With only four strikeouts on the day, Miller relied heavily on his defense and they responded with flying colors. Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez almost broke up the no-hit bid early in the game as the he hit a high chopper in the third inning to shortstop Pedro Ciriaco. Alvarez was ruled safe initially but the play was reviewed and was called out.

Earlier in that same inning third baseman Phil Gosselin robbed Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria of extra bases with a nice diving stop and throw across the diamond. Dee Gordon made it tough in the fourth inning when he almost legged out an infield single, but Shelby Miller made a nice toss to Freddie Freeman who got his foot on the bag in time. When the pressure started to mount in the seventh inning, left fielder Todd Cunningham made a running catch on the warning track to take away a hit from Giancarlo Stanton.

Andrelton Simmons was able to use his strong arm to nab Ichiro Suzuki at first on a slow roller with two outs in the eighth inning.

Miller, 24, was one out away from pitching the first no-hitter of the season in Major League Baseball. The last one came September 28th, 2014 when Jordan Zimmerman held down this same Miami Marlins team in a 1-0 victory on the season finale. On the season, Shelby Miller is now 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA. In his three starts in May he is 2-0 with an ERA of 0.36 ERA. Of those 25 May innings pitched he has allowed only one run, eight hits, and four walks while striking out 20 batters.

Atlanta’s offense took a lot of pressure off Miller as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. The Braves sent 10 batters to the plate in that second inning. A.J. Pierzynski drove in the first run on an RBI double. Pedro Ciriaco would give the Braves a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice-fly. Atlanta would tack on more runs with two outs as Jace Peterson singled a ball through the right side of the infield to score Pierzynski and Cameron Maybin. Freddie Freeman would add insult to injury as he golfed a single to right field to score Peterson and give Atlanta a 5-0 lead. That was plenty for the magnificent Miller, but for good measure Cameron Maybin would single home Pedro Ciriaco to make it a 6-0 ballgame.

Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez (0-3) came off the disabled list today and didn’t look particularly sharp. He went 5.1 innings allowing six runs on nine hits, while walking two batters and only striking out two. Alvarez has been out since April 12th with shoulder inflammation. He wasn’t supposed to pitch today but Tom Koehler was sent to the bullpen and pitched yesterday bumping Alvarez up after only one rehab start in Single-A.

Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons was scheduled to have a day off for rest today, but entered the game in the fourth inning as third baseman Phil Gosselin left with a sprained left thumb. Gosselin is listed as day-to-day.

Atlanta Braves fans were looking to make history today, something that hasn’t been done in this franchise in over 20 years. The last no-hitter in Braves history was on April 8th, 1994 when left-hander Kent Mercker threw one against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 6-0 victory.

After their 6-0 loss where the offense only mustered up two hits, Marlins manager Mike Redmond was fired as manager. There were rumors earlier in the season that Redmond was on the hot seat, and with a disappointing 16-22 start Marlins owner Jeffery Loria had enough. Expect a replacement to be announced sometime on Monday.
