It was a game in which Kyle Seager played hero and a five-man infield nearly worked for the Seattle Mariners, but in the end they found a way to choke away another game in the series finale in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Felix Hernandez toed the slab for the Mariners in this one and he had another solid performance turning in six shutout innings giving up only one hit and striking out eight while walking three. This is the 110th time Felix has struck out eight or more passing Hall of Famer Bob Feller for 20th all time.

The Mariners saw him exit after six because of pitch count as they held a 1-0 lead on the back of a Nelson Cruz double in the fourth with scored Franklin Gutierrez. That was the only run that Angels starter Hector Santiago gave up in seven innings of work as he gave up just three hits while striking out six and walking just two.

The Angels were glad to see Felix only go six because right away in the seventh they strung together a bit of a rally with pinch hitter Erick Aybar and right fielder Kole Calhoun coming through with RBI singles off of Mariners relievers Mark Lowe and Joe Beimel respectively to make it 2-1.

It stayed that way until the ninth when Angels closer Huston Street came on looking for the save. He got Robinson Cano and Cruz for the first two outs, but couldn’t get Kyle Seager as he tied the game at two with a solo shot that eventually sent the game to extras. Street has blown three games this season, and somehow two of those blown saves happen to be against the Mariners.

In extras, the Mariners went down 1-2-3, but then in the bottom half, the Angels loaded the bases off of Tom Wilhelmsen. Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon used the five-man infield as he brought in Dustin Ackley to put three guys on the left side and it worked as Albert Pujols grounded in to a 6-2-3 double play.

They weren’t quite out of the woods yet however. The next batter, Kyle Kubitza, didn’t have to do anything when Wilhelmsen skipped a 2-2 breaking ball to the plate that got by catcher Mike Zunino to score the winning run in Kole Calhoun from third to end the ballgame.

It was another heartbreaking defeat for this Mariners ball club as they found yet another way to throw away a game. Give credit to the Angels for not totally breaking after the Seager home run as they came away with the win and the series win Sunday afternoon in Anaheim.

The Mariners have an off day Monday, as they will play some interleague games in San Diego versus the Padres starting Tuesday. The Angels will stay home and host the Yankees for three games starting Monday.
