The New York Yankees have acquired closer Aroldis Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for pitchers Caleb Cotham, Rookie Davis, third basemen Eric Jagielo and second basemen Tony Renda. Chapman is currently on a one year deal for 8.5 million dollars. The news was first reported by Jack Curry of the YES Network.

Yankees Bullpen Best At The Strikeout

The trade gives the Yankees one of the best bullpens in baseball, and makes games a "six inning game" with the killer trio of a Dellin Betances-Chapman-Andrew Miller. The three pitchers combined to have 212 innings pitched last season with 347 strikeouts and 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings according to Jack Curry of the YES Network. MLB Network and YES Network broadcaster and analyst Al Leiter tweeted the Yankees' new big three are the league's best in swing and miss percentages and a combined 1.70 ERA last season.

Chapman Headed To LA Originally

It should be noted a few weeks ago during the Winter Meetings the Los Angeles Dodgers were set to acquire Chapman, but the trade was halted when it came out that Chapman was involved in a domestic incident. On December 7th, 2015, it came into the public eye that he choked, fired a gun and pushed his girlfriend against a wall.

Prior to this trade he spent his entire career with the Reds after defecting from Cuba. In his career he has a 19-20 record, 146 saves, a 2.17 ERA, and has made four All-Star teams. Chapman is a 27-year-old fire throwing left hander and will be a great addition to the Yankees already stacked bullpen. According to ESPN Stats and Info on Twitter, “Since 2010, Aroldis Chapman has thrown 1,694 pitches 100 MPH or over. Next most: 532.” The Yankees had to get this trade done after the Red Sox acquired Craig Kimbrel.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweeted,

Sherman also tweeted, “Cashman said intent is to enter season with Chapman, Miller and Betances #Yankees “real force back in our bullpen.” Chapman would have to be suspended 46 games or more to not qualify for free agency in 2016. If you look at the top fastest pitchers on MLB.com’s StatCast page, the top 62 pitches are Chapman's.
