On Sunday at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, the United States Men's National Team will take the field for the first time in 2016. As we get ready for Sunday's friendly with Iceland, here are VAVEL USA co-soccer editor Liam McMahon's three burning questions for the National Team this year...

1.) Does Jurgen Klinsmann survive the year?

The German has now been in the job for four and a half years, and has not delivered all that he promised when initially hired. Klinsmann's accomplishments are nothing to frown at; he restored the USMNT to the top of CONCACAF with a Gold Cup title in 2013, and made it out of the Group of Death at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Yet, after marquee road victories over Holland and Germany last summer, the USMNT crashed out of the 2015 Gold Cup in the semifinals against Jamaica. Pressure was heaped on Klinsmann, and many (myself included) called for him to lose his job.

Yet, as 2016 begins, the 51-year-old seems just as secure as he's ever been. The USMNT are top of their World Cup Qualifying group, and look certain to advance on to the Hex. With two matches against Guatemala, an away tie with St. Vincent and The Grenadines, and a home one with Trinidad and Tobago, the Yanks would in fact be disappointed not to finish top of their group.

While World Cup Qualifying should go swimmingly, the Americans will also be hosting the Copa America Centenario this June. After losing last October's CONCACAF Cup to Mexico, and by extension missing out on the 2017 Confederations Cup, the Copa America has taken on extra importance. While Klinsmann's side will not be expected to win a tournament which features the likes of Brazil, Argentina and Chile, a poor showing would increase the pressure on his job. It's unlikely that he won't be in charge come 2017, but in international football, you never know.

2.) Who scores the goals for the USMNT?

Jozy Altidore struggled mightily with injuries last season, and Aron Johannsson has had a tough time getting over them this year with Werder Bremen. Clint Dempsey seems aware that his time as an international is gradually drawing to a close, and no one is certain where the goals will now come from for the USMNT.

Gyasi Zardes showed remarkable growth last season, but also spent large swathes of it stationed out on the wing. Bobby Wood scored four goals in nine appearances for the USMNT in 2015, and all came in meaningful matches. His late winners over the Netherlands and Germany were the landmark moments of the year, and his equalizer against Mexico in the CONCACAF Cup prolonged the Americans' hopes of a trip to Russia next summer. Yet, Wood is still plying his trade in Germany's second division. Will Klinsmann view that as being worthy enough of a regular starting spot?

Following Sunday's friendly against Iceland, the USMNT will take on Canada on February 5th. Following that, the only two matches they have on the calendar before the Copa America are March's back-to-back World Cup Qualifiers with Guatemala. Will Klinsmann look to experiment who he plays up front in those matches? Or could we see him attempt to schedule an April friendly or a couple in May in preparation for the tournament to lock down his lineup? Only time will tell.

3.) How does Matt Miazga progress?

Matt Miazga shone on the international stage last summer at the U-20 World Cup, and his talent has now been recognized by his high profile move to Chelsea. The question now becomes, how does he continue his career? Will he fall prey to the fate which has plagued so many talented youngsters at Chelsea and get no game action? Or will he rise to the occasion and begin to make his mark on one at one of the biggest clubs in the world?

Beyond that, how many more times will he be capped over the course of the next year? He was given his first senior cap last fall to make sure he's tied to the United States, but can he continue to improve and make an impact at the Copa America? Matt Besler seemed to fall out of favor with Klinsmann in 2015, and USMNT regular Omar Gonzalez has left the LA Galaxy behind for Liga MX. If he doesn't settle in well and Miazga continues to grow, could we see a change in the pecking order? Only time will tell.

Apologies for ending this with far more questions than answers, but it's hard to avoid this situation as we see a virgin international season spread out before us. The USMNT begin play in 2016 on Sunday against Iceland before taking on Canada on February 5th. Be sure to keep checking back with us here at VAVEL USA for the latest on the National Team.
