The Leagues Cup, with an interesting format

For his part, Gibrán Lajud, goalkeeper and also a member of Santos, mentioned that the Leagues Cup is attractive because it is played in direct elimination: "These are different formats to what we are used to, here it is kill or be killed. Here our continuity is defined and it is interesting to come to this kind of tournament. This kind of tournament helps to keep us alive and growing".

This Thursday afternoon, in Florida, Santos and Orlando will try to become the last semifinalist of the Leagues Cup 2021; this is the first time that both teams participate in this competition.

What is the format of the Leagues Cup 2021?

The tournament is made up of eight teams: four from MLS (Orlando City, Seattle Sounders, New York City and Sporting Kansas City) and four from Liga MX (Santos Laguna, Tigres UANL, Pumas UNAM and León).

The three phases of the competition are direct elimination: quarterfinals, semifinals and final, and these will be played in a single match, which will be played in the United States.

What is the Leagues Cup?

It is a competition played by teams from two countries: Mexico and the USA; however, all matches are played in the United States. The participants in this competition are clubs that placed first in their respective local leagues; it is worth mentioning that the teams that qualified for the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League were not invited due to a scheduling issue.

From MLS, the fourth and fifth place in the Eastern Division and the first and second place in the Western Conference, all of them from the previous season, were invited; from Liga MX, the third, fifth, sixth and seventh best placed teams in the general classification of the last soccer year (2020-2021) advanced.
