This Thursday morning in Tehran, the Iranian national team and the Syrian team will face each other in their first match of this phase; both countries, who are in Group A along with Iraq, South Korea, Lebanon and United Arab Emirates, are two of the favorites in this sector to win a place in the World Cup.
The 12 qualified teams are placed in two groups, each of six members; each team will play ten matches (five at home and five away against their five rivals in the sector).
The first two places in each group will advance to the World Cup; in addition, the two third-placed teams will play a two-game series to determine who will play a playoff against a team from another confederation.
It is the last phase in which Asian countries compete for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar; four and a half tickets (a playoff) for that competition are in dispute. It will be played from September 2 to March 29 next year.
