Newcastle are back with a bang, as three second half goals were enough to ease past a Sheffield United side who were uncharacteristically at sea defensively.

Importantly for United they looked threatening going forward with goals scored by two of their wingers and striker Joelinton.

It went downhill for the Blades when they lost John Egan who was sent off at 0-0 for a second yellow. Newcastle move to eighth, with Wilder's men still in seventh.

Allan Saint-Maximin gives United the lead! It's a moment to forget for Stevens who misses the ball as it runs across the box and the Frenchman converts at the near-post.

HALF TIME! Newcastle 0-0 Sheffield United

It was a positive start for the Blades but Newcastle came back well with the best chance so far falling to Joelinton but he wasted his one-on-one with Dean Henderson. Since then it's been an even contest.

Can the Toon do the double?

It was a mild December evening when the two sides last met at Brammall Lane and it certainly was a smash-and-grab three points for the Magpies on the road that evening.

Martin Dubravka stood firm all night and was not to be beaten, with United managing a 2-0 win despite having less than 30% of the ball.

The spotlight was on VAR that night with Jonjo Shelvey's rather strange goal allowing to stand after an incorrect offside decision. Chris Wilder will be reinforcing to play to the whistle for sure.

It's been a rather dis-jointed first season for Bruce with the Magpies. They have struggled for goals, but find themselves eight points clear of safety with today's game in hand.

A win today would all but confirm their status given the scrapping by a number of teams below them, but it will be far from an easy welcome back to action against a physical and hard-working Blades' side.

First game for the hosts in three months, whilst the Blades come fresh off their midweek draw at Aston Villa

In the clash of the United's, Steve Bruce's Newcastle haven't played since March where his took all three points at St Mary's Stadium.

For Chris Wilder's Sheffield United side who sit nine points above their opposition today, they have already tasted experience of an empty stadium. They managed a goalless draw at Villa Park in the week, when perhaps they should have taken all three subject to an error in the goal-line technology system.
