Post-match analysis

Manchester United extend their run of unbeaten matches to 17, and in truth, they never had to get out of second gear.

Fernandes goal from the spot on 27 minutes put United ahead against the run of play, but Greenwood's rasping strike just before the interval knocked the stuffing out of Villa.

Pogba added a third in the second half to put the game beyond any doubt and The Red Devils could have added to the scoreline through Martial's effort, which crashed against the bar and through Rashford late on.

Dean Smith's side started well and they would have gone 1-0 up if Trezeguet's shot hadn't have hit the post, but that was the closest The Villains came to scoring in what was another disappointing performance.

The win narrows the gap between United and Leicester in 4th to one point and heeps more misery on Villa, who are now four points adrift of safety with just four games to play.

Solskjaer on refusing to rely on other teams and United’s 16 match unbeaten run

Manchester United are on a run of 16 matches unbeaten in all competitions and will secure a top-four place if they win all of their remaining games, but Solskjaer is refusing to rely on other teams dropping points.

He said: You never know what is going to happen, but I think the teams around us are playing well.

“We just focus on this one, the next one. If we win every single one of them, we are in the top four. We cannot rely on help from anyone else, we just have to do it ourselves.

“The last 16 games unbeaten gives us more confidence, but 16 games is nowhere near where a Manchester United team should strive towards.

"We can still go many games unbeaten if we concentrate on the right things, if we focus on the next one, the next one, the next one and then suddenly you’re stood there with 16. Hopefully that can continue.”

Aston Villa drew 2-2 at Old Trafford at the beginning of December and the Manchester boss is fully aware of the threats that Villa have.

“I think they’ve shown since the lockdown that they can hold their own,” Solskjaer added.

"You can see that they have clearly worked on their shape and their counter attacks are one of the most powerful ones in the league.

"They spring quickly, so you’ve got to be ready for that and set plays, good deliveries and good first contact players.

"And of course there are some individual players there.”

Villa should have more points on the board and have the belief to challenge United, says Dean Smith

Aston Villa have only picked up two points since the restart, but Smith believes his team hasn’t recorded the points his side's performance has warranted.

“Our form in terms of performance levels have been much better, but we haven’t got the points tally that we feel we deserve,” the Villa boss said.

“There are points that we have left out there and the only way we can put that right is in the last five games.

“We have to maintain our standards defensively and better them if possible.

“If we do that, we’re in the game and we have to make sure that we turn on our quality in the final third.”

Villa drew 2-2 against United earlier in the year courtesy of goals from talisman, Grealish and Mings, and despite Solskjaer’s side being in a rich vein of form, Smith insists his side can draw upon the belief of previous performances to pick up a positive result.

Smith added: “We got a point at Old Trafford, took a lead thanks to a great goal from Jack (Grealish) and we more than matched them on the day.

“We have to do that again, they’re in a better run of form now but there is a lot of desire within the team.

“Manchester United are a very good team, they have improved but there is a lot of heart that we can take from our performance against Liverpool.

“We have to do the same against a team that are full of confidence.

“The belief is there because the players know that they have played well enough to win games.”

Manchester United: Team News

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has picked the same team in United’s last three Premier League matches, but the Manchester United boss is unsure if Victor Lindelof will be fit enough to play on. Thursday.

It comes after the Swedish International was substituted at half-time in the 5-2 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday with a back problem, which has raised doubts over his availability.

This will most likely mean that Eric Bailly plays, as fellow centre-backs Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones remain sidelined. However, Teden Mengi, who has been training with the senior squad, Tim Fosu-Mensah and Luke Shaw are also capable of filling the position.

Aston Villa: Team News

Tyrone Mings took a kick to the calf against Liverpool but should recover in time to play on Thursday. Jack Grealish was also involved in a couple of heavy challenges, but Dean Smith has insisted: “He finished the game okay and there is no issue.”

Pepe Reine was recalled against the Premier League Champions, ahead of Orjan Nyland and is expected to start once more.

Tom Heaton, Matt Targett and Wesley are all ruled out, while Bjorn Engels is a doubt with an Achilles injury.

United must keep the pace with Chelsea and Leicester and not rely on other circumstances and results

After the midweek fixtures, Solskjaer’s side are five points behind Chelsea, who picked up three points in a crucial 3-2 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and four points behind Leicester after they could only draw 1-1 with Arsenal at The Emirates.

With no guarantee that 5th place will be enough to secure a Champions League place, United must keep applying pressure on the aforementioned sides, as well as Arsenal and Wolves, who are narrowing the gap.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport will rule on 13 July if Manchester City’s appeal to overturn their Champions League ban because of breaches to Financial Fair Play regulations have been successful or not.

However, The Red Devils know that they can guarantee a top-four place if they win all of their 5 remaining fixtures because Leicester are one of the teams they still have to play.

Premier League survival looking increasingly unlikely for Villains

With just 5 games left to play and with only two points recorded in their last 10 matches, Villa’s chances of surviving the drop look slim.

However, despite losing to the Premier League Champions at Anfield in their last game, Dean Smith’s side were a real threat on the counterattack and with more composure in the final third they could quite easily have got something from the game.

Unfortunately, that was against a Liverpool side that were sluggish after having already tied up the league for the first time in 30 years.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s rampant, Champions League chasing side won’t present Villa with as many clear-cut chances.
