FT: Manchester United 9-0 Southampton

You're going to have to give me a moment to comprehend that.

9-0. Wow. Manchester United have just completed one of the most well-rounded performances in nearly two decades, and Sir Alex Ferguson was not the manager.

True, United were helped by Southampton's two red cards that book-ended the fixture, but United were simply perfect on a cold Tuesday night in Manchester.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that we shouldn't be talking about titles - but that performance may tell us otherwise...

23:07a month ago

90+3' 9-0.

Daniel James - and it's nine. Wow. Feel for Southampton fans, as they've now lost 9-0 two seasons on the spin.
23:04a month ago

90' Three minutes are added on

Three minutes of extras. Somehow, given the check for the penalty took three in itself.
23:03a month ago

89' Eight.

It's 8-0 to Manchester United. Anthony Martial.

I can't comprehend this. Eight goals. Eight-nil to Manchester United. What?

23:03a month ago

86' GOAL! Fernandes from the spot

Fernandes sends McCarthy the wrong way, and the Red Devils are seven goals to the good.
22:59a month ago

84' Given.

Jan Bednarek walks, with the Saints down to nine.
22:57a month ago

83' Penalty!

That has to be a penalty, as Anthony Martial is hauled down in the area. It's given on the field, and it's soft, but not enough to overturn...

Surely not enough to overturned...

22:48a month ago

73' Almost seven!

United have almost grabbed a seventh! It's an audacious chip from Martial, whose effort is ever so close to finding the net - it's just past the post.
22:46a month ago

71' GOAL! McTominay gets in on the act

Scott McTominay drills it home from the edge of the box - what an effort for the Scot. He's had such an influence tonight and across the season, and the goal is just reward for his performance.
22:43a month ago

69' GOAL! It's five - and Martial is back among the goals

Anthony Martial gets himself back on the scoresheet, and it's a phenomenal effort from the Frenchman. Cracking goal for Martial - could this bring the confidence back for the striker after eight games without a goal?
22:38a month ago

64' Great defending from the Reds

Ings is through at the other end, but it's a cracking challenge by Aaron Wan-Bissaka to nudge the ball away at the eleventh hour. Ings may have been offside but it's a super challenge nonetheless.
22:34a month ago

60' Third and final change for United

Daniel James replaces Marcus Rashford.
22:29a month ago

53' Goal for Southampton; they claw one back - but VAR overturn it...

Southampton find the net as Adams slides it past De Gea after a free-kick.

VAR has a look at it, with the possibility of Adams' knee being offside from the set-piece. No, really.

It's overturned. What a bizarre decision.

22:25a month ago

51' Martial almost finds the net

Anthony Martial has his first chance of the game, as the patient build-up finds the Frenchman, but he can't quite slide it through McCarthy's legs.
22:20a month ago

46' Two changes for United

So, it's Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial on, with Luke Shaw and Edinson Cavani coming off - who on earth is playing left-back?

(my guess is a conversion to three-at-the-back, but it looks like Fred is playing as a left-sided defender)

22:04a month ago

HT: Manchester United 4-0 Southampton

Wow, what a first-half. The game was changed after just seventy-nine seconds with a Southampton red card, but Manchester United have been simply sublime here, with a four-goal lead.

Roll on the second half...

22:01a month ago

45' It's a wasted free-kick

You could tell what Fernandes was trying to do, he hit it low, with the intention of the wall jumping. Nothing doing though.

Two minutes of extras added on.

22:00a month ago

43' Nevermind - it's a free-kick.

It's been overturned, and the call is now a free-kick with most of Cavani's foot outside of the area.
21:59a month ago

42' Penalty United!

It's an on-field penalty, Cavani's foot is on the line with VAR inspecting.

Very close decision but it could go to the wire.

21:56a month ago

39' GOAL! It's four - and Cavani has a goal

It's another goal for United, it's four, and it's Edinson Cavani for United. Shaw has the cross, and Cavani is there just to powerfully head home, with nobody there to mark the Uruguayan.

This is top stuff from the Red Devils.

21:50a month ago

34' GOAL! It's an own goal for the Saints

It's an own goal. Rashford puts the ball into the area, Bednarek steers it into his own goal with Fred on-hand for what would have been a tap-in.

3-0 United!

21:49a month ago

33' Shaw has a shot on goal

Luke Shaw, with just one league goal in his career, couldn't quite get his effort on target, hitting it into the ground.
21:48a month ago

31' Fernandes has a go!

United's patient effort in the build-up leads to Fernandes having a solid shot on goal, he can't quite find either the bottom corner, or the arriving Wan-Bissaka.

The pressure is piling on for the Reds, with Cavani almost getting a free header a moment later.

21:44a month ago

28' Free-kick on the edge of the box - and Ward-Prowse is over it

James Ward-Prowse has a free-kick on the edge of the box, but his effort curls over the wall and David de Gea punches it over in a super save.
21:41a month ago

25' GOAL! Rashford finds the net

Marcus Rashford finds the back of the net, as Greenwood's ball is dragged back for the forward, allowing the Red Devils to extend their lead!
21:39a month ago

22' Lindelof almost finds the net - but he's offside

It's a super ball from the free-kick, as Shaw floats it towards Maguire and Lindelof in the box. It's the Swede that gets a boot on it, but it goes just wide of the post - yet the assistant referee's flag would have stopped any goal.
21:34a month ago

18' GOAL! Wan-Bissaka gives United the lead

Wow. Aaron Wan-Bissaka?! The right-back has managed to turn the ball home at the back post, bundling it over the line after Shaw's cross.

Who had him down as first scorer?

21:33a month ago

17' Southampton have their first shot

Che Adams has a go on the edge of the box, as Fred can't quite close him down. It's wide of De Gea's post, though.
21:30a month ago

13' Cagey opening stages

Despite the red card, United have struggled to find an opening in a now-resilient Southampton defence. United will look to attack now with the visitors looking to defend the draw, with only Che Adams in space to be found on the break.

The sending-off has been a game-changer, but as of yet United haven't quite found the right moment to have a proper go of it.

21:21a month ago

4' United have a go, early doors

Marcus Rashford is in behind the line, and could put his boot through it with a strong effort, but decides to square across to Bruno Fernandes. The midfielder is covered by everyone in the box and it's an unwise decision from Rashford.
21:19a month ago

2' RED CARD!

Alex Jankewitz is sent for a very early bath after a high, studs-up challenge on Scott McTominay. That is horrific, and Southampton are down to ten men after just two minutes.

McTominay's wound looks to hurt!

21:16a month ago

1' Kick-off

The Saints kick us off and we are underway!
21:15a month ago

The two teams are out...

...and kick-off is imminent.

United in their classic red shirts, white shorts and black socks, with the Saints in their all-navy kit, with a yellow trim.

Would Diallo be a welcome addition to United's matchday squad?

We won't get ahead of ourselves just yet, but Amad Diallo's debut for Manchester United's U23 side was excellent. Two goals that included an audacious penalty showed his immense talent - could Diallo find a place on the United bench this evening?

Could Minamino start against the Reds?

Southampton's eleventh-hour signing of Liverpool foward Takumi Minamino could be a real wildcard for Ralph Hasenhüttl's side as they desperately seek some form.

The winger signed on a short-term loan for the Saints, after experiencing some growing pains on his arrival to the Premier League from RB Salzburg last year.

Manchester United: Team news

The hosts are set to have a fully-fit squad ahead of this evening's clash with Southampton. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Scott McTominay would be ready to go, despite exiting early from the weekend's game with Arsenal, and both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are set to be available.

The only concern that faces Solskjaer is Phil Jones, who has recently been added to United's Premier League squad list. Jones had missed the first half of the season recovering from a knee operation in the summer.

Saints can't buy a win - can they see off the Reds?

Southampton haven't picked up three points for almost a month, as their 1-0 victory against Liverpool in January was the last time they picked up any points in the league.

Ralph Hasenhüttl's side sat sixth in the Premier League table, just three points from top spot. Since that win, three defeats have followed and they now sit fifteen points from league leaders Manchester City, in eleventh.

A win would be crucial for Southampton if they are to challenge for European qualification, of which their early-season form proved they are capable.

United desperate to recover their form

Title challengers seldom lose to the worst team in the league - and a stalemate at a fairly poor Arsenal side wasn't the way in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have wanted Manchester United to bounce back.

Southampton, in the reverse fixture, was when Manchester United turned a corner, coming from behind to secure a memorable victory. They must see off The Saints once more to continue to consider themselves title contenders.

How the land lies ahead of kick-off...

This is a huge test for both squads. Manchester United are looking to recapture their form after stumbling against Sheffield United and Arsenal in the past week, while Southampton haven't picked up a league victory since their surprising narrow win over Liverpool, nearly a month ago.
