Story of the match

The scoring was opened in emphatic style through a Luke Thomas volley that arrowed into the top corner, before Mason Greenwood levelled soon after by sliding the ball past Schmeichel.

Neither side showed much quality in the first half as attempts were limited and passing was sloppy, with the score staying at 1-1 at the break.

Leicester came out after the break much the better side and started to create chances with sharp passing and relentless pressing.

Despite all of this, their goal came from a corner as Caglar Soyuncu smashed the ball home with a powerful header to put his side back in front.

United only showed attacking intent in the final few minutes as Leicester sat back to defend their lead but did not do enough to truly test Schmeichel in goal.

This meant that Leicester claimed a massive three points in the fight for a top four place while also winning the title for Manchester City as United can no longer catch their city rivals.

The Belgian could not quite reach the ball as it trickles just wide, with Tielemans colliding with the post in the process.

Luckily he is ok but unluckily for Leicester, they are not further in front.

Half time: Man Utd 1-1 Leicester

The ball strikes the wall and the half time whistle sounds.

Leicester got themselves off to the best possible start with a superb first league goal for Luke Thomas, but United replied quickly through a clinical Mason Greenwood finish into the bottom corner.

Other than that, the game has been a cagey affair that has lacked in quality, with Leicester especially looking a little nervy at times.

A big improvement in quality is needed for the second half, with Maddison and Fernandes both waiting in the wings for either side.

Thoughts for the match

With Man Utd only retaining one player in their starting lineup, Leicester will be the favourites for the match as they start one of their strongest possible teams.

Maddison and Ricardo's absence comes with the pair still aiming to get to full fitness and may have been decided with the FA Cup in mind.

Despite the changes, United will still pose a threat with the pace of Greenwood and Diallo in behind and the creativity of van de Beek and and Mata in midfield, meaning the back three and Ndidi must still play at the top of their game in order to nulify the danger.

Rodgers on Evans

It was a big blow to lose Evans when they did, with Leicester's defence seemingly crumbling against Newcastle.

Rodgers spoke about Evans during his press conference and offered some promising news going forward.

"We've been managing him over the last couple of weeks and he's come through really well.

"He was in a lot of pain [last Thursday] and woke up [on Friday] feeling better. In the warm-up, just as he was coming in before kick-off, he felt discomfort.

"Jonny's a real warrior so you know if he's not able to at least give it a go, then he's really suffering. We'll just have to see how he is and what his availability is going forward."

Solskjaer on playing youngsters

During his pre-match press conference, the United boss made stated that he will promote youth players to his starting lineup in a bid to save his squad from injuries in the tight schedule.

"We will sit down with the sports scientists today, we can have a theoretical team now but we’ll have to see how they react when they come in tomorrow and on Tuesday morning and then pick a team Tuesday afternoon.

"They (young players) are in contention, yeah, definitely. They’re in the first-team squad, they’re training with us every day, so I would think that some of the young boys will get an appearance, definitely."

Leicester team news

Brendan Rodgers may consider making changes to his side in the build up to the FA Cup final but will still have to start as strong of a side as possible with a top four place on the line.

The Northern Irishman will be without his countryman as Jonny Evans is expected to miss out due to his heel problem that resulted in a late withdrawal from the Newcastle clash.

Man United team news

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer faces a selection dilema as he must contend with a tightly packed schedule that was not helped by the rearranged fixture with Liverpool.

Due to this, the Norwegian is expected to make changes to his starting lineup but one enforced change comes in the shape of Harry Maguire who will miss a league match for the first time in a United shirt due to an ankle injury.

Last meeting between the sides

Leicester will be hoping for a repeat of the last result as they ran out 3-1 winners in the FA Cup quarter final.

Kelechi Iheanacho opened the scoring after he pounced on a defensive mistake but Mason Greenwood's left-footed strike levelled the score before half time.

Youri Tielemans put the hosts back in front shortly after the resumption of the match with a pinpoint finish into the bottom corner, before Iheanacho put the game to bed and with a header at the back post from a corner to set up a semi final clash with Southampton.

Season reaches crunch time

For the second consecutive season, United and Leicester meet at the end of the season with it all to play for in terms of a top four place.

The Foxes' push for Champions League has somewhat halted over the past couple of games due to disappointing results against Southampton and Newcastle United, while the Red Devils, fresh from making it to the Europa League final, came back to defeat Aston Villa top put themselves on the brink of a top four finish.

The emphasis will be on the away side to take the game to United as the points on offer are greatly needed but that opens up the possibility of counter attacks, something that the Leicester defence struggled with against the Magpies last time out.
