NBA Costless Agency began Tuesday at 12:01 EST, and as expected the Dallas Mavericks were more than busy making phone calls and setting up face to face meetings with multiple costless agent players.

Surprisingly the Mavericks first face to face meeting was Mark Cuban meeting with Mavs unrestricted costless agent (UFA) point guard Devin Harris. The Mavericks were also reported to be the first team to call small forward Luol Deng, while also reaching out to costless agents such as Carmelo Anthony, Chandler Parsons, Pau Gasol, Paul Pierce, and Trevor Ariza.

In the meantime it appears that Harris is the priority, which would make sense considering that inconsistent Raymond Felton is the only veteran point guard on the roster after arriving in the six-player deal that sent last season’s starter, Jose Calderon, to the Knicks.

However, the Mavs ultimately might not be able to offer Harris more than the cap-room exception of approximately $2.7 million per year for up to two seasons. Harris has said he’s seeking a deal in the three-year, $9 million area, similar to the offer he agreed to with Dallas last summer before the discovery that he needed complicated toe surgery.

The Mavs have also been rumored to be interested in costless agents Kyle Lowry, Isiah Thomas, and Mo Williams in case they are unsuccessful in bring Harris back.

In the grand scheme of things, the Mavericks will be waiting for Carmelo's Anthony decision before making any major signings. If Anthony chooses to go back to New York or elsewhere the Mavs will be making strong pushes to acquire either Chandler Parsons or Luol Deng.

The Mavs also hope to bring back Shawn Marion and Vince Carter, but it will all depend if they are willing to accept the veteran's minimum. Vince Carter is rumored to have said he plans to shed the "biggest bargain" label he received 3 years ago with the Mavs and get a raise wherever he decides to go. If that is the case it may be hard for Carter and the Mavs to come to an agreement on a new contract.

The Mavericks are looking at all their options and are not ruling out anything. That's become clear by the 20 calls owner Mark Cuban and general manager Donnie Nelson made to costless agents last night.
