At 10-43, the New York Knicks have limped in to the All-Star break with the worst record in the NBA. The storied franchise is having the worst season in their long history, and it is unlikely to get better anytime soon, especially now.

In an interview on ESPN Radio with Marc Stein, P.J. Carlesimo and Marc Kestecher, Knicks’ leading scorer and star forward Carmelo Anthony said that it is “very likely” that he will sit out the rest of the season after the All-Star Game because of a sore left knee.

“It’s very likely. Now I’ve got to start thinking about the future. This season is this season,” Anthony told ESPN Radio. “So I really want to just sit down with my team and sit down with the proper people to just kind of plan this thing out and see exactly what I have to do to get done and just fix it.”

Despite the injury to his knee, Anthony does plan on playing in the All-Star Game on Sunday. He was voted in by the fans as a starter for the Eastern Conference. “They voted me in for a reason, so at least I can show them that I appreciate that by just participating in the game.”

Anthony also talked about possible surgery options on his knee, but assured that it will not interfere with off-season workouts. “That’s why if anything was to get done, I want to get it done right away so I’m not taking time and missing training camp and things like that,” Anthony said. “When I come back to training camp, I want to be sharp.”

With their league worst record, and best player sitting out for the rest of the season, the Knicks are likely to have a very high pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. On top of that, they are projected to have more than $30 million in cap space heading into the off-season, making them a potentially attractive destination for free agents. With smart spending and drafting, Knicks’ president Phil Jackson could have the assets to pull off a quick turnaround.

In order for the Knicks to turn this mess around quickly, they will need a healthy Anthony heading in to next season. It is best for both him and the franchise for Anthony to shut it down for the rest of this lost season.
