New York Knicks small forward Cleanthony Early was shot and robbed at gun point early this morning after leaving a Queens, New York strip club at 4:15 am with his girlfriend. According to the Daily News Early was in an Uber with his girlfriend and the vehicle was surrounded and six men jumped out of the car and proceeded to shoot Early in the knee, steal his gold chain and other jewelry. The men also reportedly removed the gold caps from Early’s teeth. Early has been released from the hospital this morning.

According to an eyewitness who heard the incident go down, “It was madness in the middle of the night. I heard him yelling…It looked like the guy was in pain. He started cursing.” The Daily News reports that the “bridework bling” was found lying on the ground near an empty shell cashing and that Early needed help from the police to enter the ambulance when they arrived.

This is the second year of Cleathony Early’s career after getting drafted out of Whicita State in the second round by the Knicks. Last season he did have knee surgery on the same knee that was shot this morning. The Knicks won 108-96 over the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden. In his career Early has a .359 field goal percentage with 4.4 points per game and 2.0 rebounds per game.

This is the second time in recent weeks that a Knick was robbed as Derrick Williams was robbed by two females of $750,000 worth of jewelry. New York Knicks Head Coach Derek Fisher said Cleanthony Early was “ok” and that the injuries were not life threatening. The Knicks released a statement saying “We are aware of what occurred with Cleanthony Early this morning and are relieved that he is not in a life threatening situation. We will not comment any further until we receive more information.” According to Al Iannazzone of Newsday Knicks GM Steve Mills, Derek Fisher and the head of security for the Knicks addressed the team today. Carmelo Anthony recently made an NBA sponsored PSA for gun control and said in response to this incident, ”We have to do something. We are all targets, at the end of the day, regardless of how much love people show you.” A few Knicks did tweet messages of support to Early including Kristaps Porzingis and Jerian Grant.
