It has to happen to someone, but the Jets certainly did not want it to happen to them. In their loss today, they became the first team shutout in the 2014 NFL season.

The New York Jets have now lost four games in a row, after winning their opener against the Raiders. The Chargers simply won all facets of the game. They only allowed the Jets to convert one of their twelve third downs. The Jets also didn't convert their only fourth down attempt. They didn't attempt any plays on the Chargers side of the field for the entire first half. In fact, it wasn't until the 4th quarter with 7:35 left in the game, that the Jets were finally on the right side of the field offensively. That came after veteran Chargers cornerback, Richard Marshall, got called for pass interference. Michael Vick was in the game for the benched Geno Smith. When for an entire game the Jets totaled 60 yards passing and 91 yards rushing, that is entirely too pathetic.

What are the Jets going to do from here? Clearly changes need to be made. The Jets have a defensive coach in Rex Ryan, but clearly the offensive side of the ball is not getting anything done. Marty Mornhinweg is the Offensive Coordinator and was there last year as well. It's plain to see that this man does not know what he is doing and needs to be removed. He came to the Jets after being the Offensive Coordinator of the Eagles from 2006-2012. They played poorly most of the seasons he was there and was part of the debacle that got Andy Reid out of town. It looks like he will probably get the coaching staff from New York fired as well as General Manager John Idzik. Also, the Jets had more penalties in the game finishing with 12 total penalties for 94 yards.

On the other hand, the Chargers are storming through their competition lately. Their only loss was to the Arizona Cardinals in week 1, by just a single point at that. Since then they have beaten the Seahawks, Bills, Jaguars, and Jets by a total of 116-45. Their leading rusher coming into this game was Donald Brown and he had a total of 100 rushing yards. But a little known rookie would make his presence felt in this game, and his name is Branden Oliver.

Oliver had less rushing yards coming into this game than the quarterback Philip Rivers. Little did anyone know he was going to score two touchdowns, have 114 yards rushing and 68 yards receiving. Welcome to the NFL Oliver, Chargers fans are glad to see you rise up now that they know you are on the team. He was undrafted from the University of Buffalo and is clearly a diamond in the rough. He is 5'8" 208 lbs, more of a Darren Sproles or Danny Woodhead type running back. They are always underrated so be sure to keep an eye on this kid for a long time coming since he is only 23 years old right now.

The other two touchdowns of the day were passes thrown to Antonio Gates. Philip Rivers is having the best season of his career in his second season with Mike McCoy. He had 20 completions on 28 attempts on Sunday, totaling 288 yards. His passer rating in this game was 125.3. It is amazing to see how closely Rivers is distributing the ball among his main targets in San Diego. Through 5 games Eddie Royal leads the team with 276 yards, Antonio Gates follows with 275, Keenan Allen has 269, and Malcom Floyd has 259. Floyd had the most receiving yards today with 72, but wasn't enough to catch him up to all of his fellow targets.

Defensively, there is nothing to be happier about than to shutout your opponent. As far as individual statistics, the Chargers had one defensive interception in the game that was picked off by cornerback Brandon Flowers. Linebacker Donald Butler and defensive tackle Sean Lissemore both got their first sack of the season. In special teams, even Nick Novak had a better game than Nick Folk, making the field goal that he attempted, while Folk didn't get to kick at all. Rivers was even replaced by Kellen Clemons late in the fourth quarter because the game was in hand. Total domination by the Chargers in all phases of the game gave them the win 31-0.

Next up for the Chargers is a road game in Oakland. That shouldn't be much of a challenge for them. The Jets have to try and get airborne against another high powered offense from the AFC West in the Denver Broncos. They at least get Denver at home, which is a slight consolation prize. These teams are likely to continue their trajectories in the coming weeks.
