Don Garber has done it again. You may be asking “what is this guy talking about?” What yours truly is talking about is the fact that Garber added Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard to the 2015 MLS All-Star game by way of his “Commissioner Picks”. It has to be one of the most outrageous things he has done and in saying that comes as kind of a shock.

Since Garber became Commissioner of Major League Soccer in 1999, he has done several good things for the league as well as some boneheaded things. We won’t get into those at this time, but Garber has made the wrong decision in selecting Lampard and Gerrard to the All-Star game that takes place in Commerce City, CO on July 29th against the Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League.

First things first, neither of these players deserve to be on the team as they have yet to play one minute for their respective teams in MLS play. Lampard was supposed to make his debut for New York City FC, but Head Coach Jason Kries held him out due to an injury. Gerrard has played one game for the LA Galaxy, but that was a friendly this past weekend against Club America and he only played for 45 minutes. He is expected to make his MLS debut this coming Friday against the San Jose Earthquakes. Kreis is hoping that Lampard will make his debut this coming Saturday against the New England Revolution.

Both players have a long storied career in the English Premier League. Lampard is Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer with 202 goals in 601 appearances across all competitions and Gerrard played his entire career with Liverpool and scored 186 goals in 708 appearances across all competitions.

One could see why Garber would want them at the game, but it is not the right decision. There are plenty of other MLS players that deserve to be selected to the game. Granted, the first list is just the players voted by the supporters. Pablo Mastroeni, coach of the MLS All-Stars, will get to select other players that were bypassed by the fans. Maybe Garber could have selected Ethan Finlay and Kei Kamara as they are both having outstanding season and both lead the league in goals (Kamara) and assists (Finlay).

Sure, people will more than likely flock to the game or their television to watch two of the greats from the Premier League, but it should have been done differently. If Mastroeni wanted them, he could have added them. It wouldn’t be the first time that a coach would have added a player to the team that may not have deserved it. It happened last year when Caleb Porter added Liam Ridgewell for an injured player.

What if Lampard plays in the game and reinjures his calf muscle? Now he is out even longer and the fans in New York City would have to wait even longer to see him play in person. Just a bad decision Garber, bad.
