The Worcester Warriors have returned to the Aviva Premiership at the first time of asking, after a pulsating two-leg final victory over Bristol.

After winning the first leg away at Ashton Gate last Wednesday evening (29-28) with a last minute try, the second leg was even more dramatic as Worcester battled back from the brink.

After weathering many of Bristol's attacks early in the game, it was the hosts who crossed the tryline first with Chris Pennell going over in the corner as Worcester built a 16-6 half-time lead.

After the break, Bristol battled back and were given a chance to take control of the game when the home side had Cooper Vuna sent to the sin bin for an infringement close to his own line.

Bristol took advantage, scoring three times whilst Vuna was off the field through Jack Lam, Jack Tovey and Matthew Morgan to lead 58-45 on aggregate with less than 10 minutes remaining in the tie.

Somehow, this was not the end of the drama as Bristol coughed up possession, allowing Worcester to force a penatly try with five minutes remaining, which also led to a yellow card for Bristol's star man Lam.

After another penalty was awarded to Worcester, they descended on the Bristol line, before being held up and awarded a scrum. Referee JP Doyle sent another Bristol player to the sin bin in the form of their captain Dwayne Peel for a similar offence to Vuna's at the other end.

From the ensuing scrum, Worcester sent the ball wide, with the two-man advantage paying off as Pennell crossed for his second try setting up a conversion to win promotion.

Ryan Lamb, who had a dreadful night from the tee in the first leg, stepped up and drilled the ball between the posts to spark joyous celebrations as Worcester claimed the all important draw to regain their place in the Premiership.

Dean Ryan, Worcester's director of rugby told BBC Hereford & Worcester, "Sport is cruel. Bristol were the better side on the night.

"We really didn't have any of the game in the second half, and the pressure kept coming.

"We were great last week and we weren't so great in this game, but we got the result. I am a little bit shocked as I never saw that coming, but it has been a long old trawl and today was our day."

For Bristol, this is their third defeat in the Championship final and they will spend another season in English rugby's second tier as they continue to search for the formula to finally get over the line and return to the Premiership.
