Are you ready NBA fans? Game 2 between the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors has begun!!!

15 minutes till tip-off!!!

We are about 30 minutes till tip-off between the Washington Wizards vs. Toronto Raptors in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference first round matchup!!!

Toronto Raptors starting lineup: PG: Kyle Lowry, SG: DeMar DeRozan, SF: Terrence Ross, PF: Tyler Hansbrough, C: Jonas Valanciunas

Washington Wizards starting lineup: PG: John Wall, SG: Bradley Beal, SF: Paul Pierce, PF: Nene, C: Marcin Gortat

Wizards head coach Randy Wittman heading into tonight’s game, “Game 2 is going to be harder than Game 1. If you’re just going to be happy with (winning Game 1), then we don’t have a chance. We’re going to have to play better than we did in Game 1. No question about it.”

It’s no secret the Raptors live and die by their perimeter play, but their big men need to have more of an impact, namely Jonas Valanciunas. Toronto’s center only played 24 minutes and scored six points while grabbing eight rebounds. His lack of time on the floor negated Washington’s center Marcin Gortat, but the Wizards still had a presence with the versatile Nene. They might need to go big with Valanciunas, especially if their perimeter shots don’t fall tonight.

Raptors guard Louis Williams was just named the Sixth Man of the Year and he will need to prove in Game 2 as he struggled mightily in the first game shooting 4-of-16 from the field for only 10 points. Williams scores in volume and is an intricate part of Toronto’s success.

Wizards head coach Randy Wittman decided to put Paul Pierce at the stretch-four position and it really turned out well. The Raptors big men had no answer for Pierce as he stretched the floor and still had the ability to attack the basket. It also deterred their ability to rebound the basketball which turned out to be a huge factor in Game 1.

The deciding advantage for Washington in Game 1 was their huge advantage on the boards as they outrebounded the Raptors 61-to-48, including 19-to-10 on the offensive glass. The Wizards big men were much more aggressive and physical that led to plenty of second-chance opportunities for Washington. It was much needed as the Wizards struggled shooting to the tone of 39.4 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from behind the arc.

Kyle Lowry had this to say about his performance, “Fouling out in general, not being able to be myself and help my teammates made it more frustrating. But that’s Game 1, you learn from the mistakes and you get better.”

Nobody struggled more in Game 1 than All-Star starter Kyle Lowry who scored only seven points on 2-of-10 shooting, and compiled only four assists to go with three turnovers in only 33 minutes of play. To add insult to injury, Lowry dealt with foul trouble all game and fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

Despite the poor shooting by the Wizards backcourt they did stuff the stat sheet in other areas. Wall dished out eight assists, grabbed six rebounds, and turned the ball over only one time. Beal grabbed nine rebounds and dished out six assists. Both guys will need to step offensively in Game 2 if they want a chance to win, but head coach Randy Wittman has to be happy with their defense and their ability to make a positive impact in other areas.

Neither team shot the ball well in Game 1, especially their respective star backcourts. John Wall and Bradley Beal combined to shoot 11-of-41 from the field for 26 points. They also combined to shoot 1-of-9 from behind the arc. Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan went 8-of-30 shooting from the field for 22 points, and neither made a three-pointer on five combined attempts.

This is the second consecutive year the Toronto Raptors relinquished home-court advantage in the first round. Last year it was against a Paul Pierce led Brooklyn Nets team who won in seven games.

Despite Washington’s struggles on the road this season, losing 15 of their last 19 away from Verizon Center during the regular season, they have won six of their last seven road playoff games. In their first round matchup against Chicago last year the Wizards won all three games on the road in the United Center.

Paul Pierce had this to say following the victory in Game 1, “You’ve got to embrace it. It’s not that I’m a bad guy. That’s just the role you portray to media on the court, on the road. Everybody is booing you, no one likes you. I embrace it. It fuels me, truthfully.”

Enemy number one in Toronto is Wizards forward Paul Pierce and the hatred heightened as he led the Wizards in Game 1 with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including four field goals from behind the arc. Pierce said the Raptors don’t have “it” and he backed up his comments Saturday, despite a shower of boos every time he touched the ball.

The Washington Wizards will try to take Game 2 from the Toronto Raptors tonight as they remain on the road looking to go up 2-0 in the series before they head home to D.C. for two games. Washington defeated Toronto 93-86 Saturday afternoon in overtime grabbing Game 1 on the road for the second consecutive year in the postseason.
