Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Marcos Rojo and Paddy McNair are unavailable for selection for Wednesday's game against Ipswich Town.

Rojo had come into the Man United side following the horrific injury to left-back Luke Shaw in mid-September against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League.

McNair and Rojo out for United, after Shaw injury in previous week

McNair had been involved in the United matchday squad on numerous occasions but has not started a game this season and was likely to play against Ipswich in a the Football League Cup.

The competition often sees fringe players like McNair, just 19 years old, come into the first team starting eleven but McNair won't get a chance with a 'minor injury'.

Phil Jones returns, on bench for the first time this season

Rojo has a hamstring injury, but the extent of it is not known. Meanwhile, Phil Jones will return to the United squad having picked up multiple injuries since the start of the Premier League season against Tottenham Hotspur in early August.

Jesse Lingard and James Wilson will not feature despite young players often starting in the League Cup for clubs like Manchester United. Lingard and Wilson both scored in the United U21s side against Everton U21s on Monday night in a 3-1 victory.

Van Gaal said, on the subject of Wilson and Lingard that he doesn't "need them so they can have a day off and then Thursday, they will be fresh and can train."

The Dutchman's hesitance to start the best of his younger players in the League Cup may be due to the humiliation at the hands of MK Dons to Van Gaal's United in one of his first games in August 2014. The Dons thrashed United 4-0 with youngsters like Nick Powell and Reece James.

Out of that 18-man squad at stadium:mk just a year ago, only David De GeaNick Powell, Paddy McNair, Andreas Pereira and James Wilson are currently at the club.
