Sunderland AFC captain John O'Shea, has said that youngster Duncan Watmore's energy is "crucial" to the Black Cats.

Great addition to the squad

Watmore has been a major addition to the side since breaking through at the Stadium of Light at the beginning of the last season, and been one of the few bright sparks in what has been a dismal start to the David Moyes' era on Wearside.

He had another excellent performance at the weekend in their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion, with the youngster producing an excellent run to pull the ball back for Patrick van Aanholt's equaliser, and O'Shea said that his energy is vital for the Black Cats.

O'Shea told safc.com: "Duncan's energy is very important for us in the team at the minute and that is going to be crucial for us going forward.”

He concluded: “A lot of the lads feed on it and the positive energy he has around the place, not just on the pitch. He is a fantastic lad and he is going to go from strength to strength.”

Moving on up

Van Aanholt has once again proven his attacking credentials, and Moyes has admitted that the Dutch full-back will be used in a more forward role after showing his less than excellent defending.

"I think he's probably a wing-back - he showed that," Moyes told Sky Sports News HQ. "I'm pleased with the goals he's come up with, I know that's what he's capable of, but I've not been so pleased with some of the positions he's been taking up defensive-wise."

Moyes concluded: "I'm not saying I will (play him there), but I had a look at it just to see what I thought. I just felt that he needs to improve on his defending because we know what he brings going forward."

Sunderland AFC will take on Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday, October 15 with kick-off at 3pm BST.
