Daphne Corboz has signed a new contract with Manchester City Women. The USA under-23 international, who joined the club in July, extended her stay at the team that came runners-up in the 2015 FA WSL, finishing behind Chelsea Ladies. The playmaker made an instant impact with a goal and two assists in her first four games, and quickly became a first-team regular.
Successful career at the University
Born on 14 June, 1993 at Mobile, Alabama, she attended Watchung Hills Regional High School in New Jersey and played club soccer with PDA Tsunami. After getting a scholarship with Georgetown University, she played for the women's soccer team whom she was a three-time All-America selection from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America; including first-team honors in 2012 after her sophomore season. Corboz finished her college career with 47 goals, a school record.
The midfielder was accepted to medical school at Rutgers University near her home in New Jersey and was chosen by Sky Blue FC, her hometown club, with the 22nd pick in the 2015 NWSL College Draft in January 2015. Eventually she chose to postpone medical school and signed with Manchester City in July 2015.
Instant impact with City
Corboz made her FA WSL debut on July 12, 2015, coming on as a second-half substitute against Birmingham City. She scored her first goal for Manchester City the following weekend in a 3-0 win over Bristol Academy (now Bristol City Women). With a goal and two assists in her first four games and quickly became a first-team regular.
Corboz was called up to the United States Under-23 team in late 2014 and played at the 2015 Four Nations Tournament in Norway. Born to French-born parents, Corboz has a dual citizenship with France and for not having played in the senior teams of USA, could opt for French citizenship.
"It feels great to have signed a new contract. Choosing to come here was the best decision of my life so it wasn't a difficult decision to stay," said Corboz. She added, "I feel I've learned a lot as a player and a person. As I mentioned last year, the facilities here are second to none, and the staff and players I get to learn from every day are incredible too."
Manchester City Women's will play against swedish sides FC Rosengard and Pitea IF at the Academy Stadium. The games will take place on Sunday 7 February and Thursday 25 February, respectively.
