Former cyclist Chris Boardman is convinced Alex Dowsett will set a new Hour Record when he takes to the track.

Dowsett, 26, will attempt to beat the record in Manchester on Saturday.

The current holder is BMC's Australian rider Rohan Dennis, who rode 52.491 kilometres.

"I think he'll get it, but it could be tough," said Boardman, who held the record during the 1990s and enjoyed a famous battle with Graeme Obree.

"He's well qualified in the discipline."

Commonwealth Games time trial champion Dowsett's attempt at the record had to be rearranged after he suffered a broken collarbone in a training crash earlier this year.

The Movistar rider described his record attempt as the "ultimate time trial."

"It's a case of man and machine: no changing conditions, no wind, no real tactics," he said.

"It's the purest form of a time trial. There's no tiny respite in the hour record. The pacing is so important - you never get a chance to recover."
